All this talk about Marte being the best player on the team (agreed) and a debatable elite talent just highlight the problem: whatever Marte is, he is not someone to build around and if he is indeed the best example of the organization “developing players” than that is faint praise indeed.

Makes no difference to me what his WAR is, whether he made an all star team, etc., he has not helped this team become “better”. He’s been suspended, lazy, good and bad. and someone wants to make him out to be a poster child of Pirate development?

The guy has all the tools to be one of the best in the game. He has fallen far short of his potential. The fact he is the best player on the team, etc does not change the fact: he was a center piece that that is not “worth” building around.

If that’s development, I guess anything can be.

Huntington's definition of development is to run every player out until they reach their FA year (or close) and then salary dump him and immediately start pumping the future with some other player who has a number of years until he reaches FA. Then rinse and repeat.
