Sounds like he's saying expect more of the same, but for less $$$ because that is the way we operate and we just need players to play better.

Quite the word salad, but this was my favorite quote: "Payroll is not what's gonna drive winning here the most. That's mostly because just simply of the structure of the game in a place like Pittsburgh to win." How is the "structure of the game" different in Pittsburgh? The problem isn't a "place like Pittsburgh", the problem is an owner who refuses to participate like almost all of the other owners.

And this beauty: “One of the things this year clarified for me is that, while relative to free agency to trades is, that I think our approach to free agency the last two offseasons, and sort of the overall results we got from that, have been fine.” Fine?!? The standards are that low? Seriously, don't even bother signing any free agents if what you got from this past group you consider to be "fine". Sometimes I think the reason they sign free agents is to cover up the fact that the drafts have been so bad that, if free agents aren't signed, the organization won't be able to field a major league team.

This is Cherington covering his butt. He didn't make any bad FA signings. Nope, just ask him. And he can't call out his boss for being cheap but he wants the baseball world to know that...well, his boss is cheap. "The structure of the game in a place like Pittsburgh" means he doesn't have money to spend on players like other GMs in other cities. "Payroll is not what's gonna drive winning here the most" means Nutting won't give him a competitive payroll so he has to try other means to win.

Cherington has no doubt spend the latter part of the season wondering if he was going to be fired because of the state of the team. He has to know his days are numbered even if he makes it thru next season. He's making sure every potential future employer knows his hands are tied by the lack of payroll due to "the structure" in Pittsburgh of severe financial constraints. He chooses his words carefully. But he's clearly trying to convey "Don't Blame Me!"

Ben to Nutting, please trade me to another team while you can get something for me. Not that GM's are really traded but Ben should be desperate by now.

Twins GM now available. How about getting him to run the team?

Gotta love this quote from our deranged, delusional GM:
https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pir ... 2410040058

"I think we've figured out a lot about what leads to success with hitters at the major league level,” Cherington said. “We're not going to move off of that." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NtksEHYtK4

Here's the proof of that success:
Runs: 13th of 15 in NL
Hits: 14th of 15
doubles; 15th of 15
triples: 13th of 15
HRs: 13th of 15
RBIs: 12th of 15
BA: 14th of 15
OBP: 14th of 15
SLG: 15th of 15
OPS: 15th of 15

Yeah, don't move off of that.

I opened the link and read the article before looking at what you posted. I, too, came to the same quote you posted and laughed and laughed. He couldn't have possibly been serious when he said that.

maybe he is talking about other teams' hitters. Now that he knows what they do he is going to teach Pirate hitters.

I may start using the cone of silence next time Ben talks.
