On radio this morning the Difo play was the number one highlight clip (with Cubs announcers) and it's also on the home page of ESPN's baseball home page.

Is there a more embarrassing play for a major league player than missing a pop fly? Maybe a ground ball rolling between the legs? I can't imagine Difo got much sleep last night.

What a Piratey game. The more they succeed, the more they fail. In the words of Gordon Lightfoot in Sundown, "Sometimes I think it's a sin when I feel like I'm winning when I'm losing again."

They get a quick 3-0 lead in the first and then don't score again until the 9th. Not even a base runner after the 2nd inning.

Keller finally has a very good game. No runs, no walks, 6 singles but 2 of them were infield hits, 8 Ks, 89 pitches. So naturally he had to be taken out to send him the message that "no matter how well you pitched today, we don't trust you for one more inning." So Kuhl enters the game for no apparent reason and immediately gives up 5 runs.

But the Bucs get lucky in the 9th. A catcher's interference on a .188 hitter loads the bases when they desperately need base runners instead of outs. And Perez lugs his .143 BA to the plate to PH despite being in an 0 for 27 stretch when he hadn't had a hit in a month. And amazingly, he singles to score 2 and tie the game.

Then in the "let's pretend it's baseball" extra innings, the fictional runner allowed to start the inning at 2B because, well, just because, gets bunted to 3B and stands there watching Difo (apparently) make his first ever attempt to catch a pop up. But this foreign concept is above Difo's pay grade as he staggers around and takes a swing at the ball with his glove but whiffs. Luckily, the ball didn't hit him in the head and trickled harmlessly away as the fictional runner trots home and the Cubs literally win a "laugher.'"

You can't make this stuff up.

Fortunately, the '62 Mets set a standard even this Pirates team can't reach. So we have that.

To think I stayed up late for this!

Adam Frazier would've caught it.

At last count, Shed said that won't be until 2035.

Forgetting how many outs there are, letting a guy score, and another guy go from home to scoring position. That's my vote.

It's hard to see a brighter future for this team with Shelton at the helm. I get so tired of the platitudes rather than just saying we stink up any place we go. It's time these guys look themselves in the mirror. Why doesn't Tucker or Alford learn how to bunt so he can get on base, then steal second and then third just make things happen. Make the bunt a real threat if you can't hit. Use what you have. I guess it's hard to re-invent yourself but .198 BA isn't going to get it. We have to find those guys who aren't world class at everything to get very good at a few things. What I see on the field is a couple of guys with great skills and a bunch of guys with average skills and just hoping to find success. Find a few things you can do hone those things and success brings more success. Bunt steal second and third maybe someone can sacrifice you in. The next time your up the 3rd baseman moves in and that little roller you hit might get by him. Keep the chain moving. Anyway that is the philosity I wish this manager would instill in these guys not excuses. I can't stand the guy. It's time to move on Cherington.
