This was Danny Murtaugh's first full season as manager and the year the Pirates went from being MLB's laughingstock of the 1950s to a 2nd place finish. Clemente grounded out in the 1st inning and then tripled in his next 3 ABs in the 4th, 5th and 8th. He was out at the plate trying to stretch the 5th inning triple into an inside the park home run. The Pirates defeated the Reds 4-1. Curt Raydon pitched 6 innings giving up 1 unearned run. LH reliever Don Gross pitched the final 3 innings giving up no runs, hits or walks. Smoky Burgess and Don Hoak played for the Reds.

Thanks, Bobster for the trip back memory lane. I was only 10 and in year one of what is now 61 yrs of going to games. What a ballplayer "The Great One" was. The greatest Bucco in my lifetime.

Glasnow pitched two innings yesterday, gave up a two run homer. One hit, two walks, five strikeouts.

If Austin Meadows were still on the team, he would be second in home runs, second in slugging and third in OPS. (Behind Bell and Reynolds)

He's only 24 years old, making $557,000 and and has two team controlled seasons before he hits arbitration.

That trade keeps looking worse every day, even setting aside Glasnow and Baz.

I've read he is not a good fielder.

Since the trade to Philadelphia, Dickerson has hit 8 homers, and driven in 34. He has done very well since the July 31 trade.

Since going to the Brewers in the late July trade Lyles is 6-1 with an era of 2.39. He is a big reason why the Brewers are in the Wild Card race. This is another pitcher who has left Pittsburgh and has become a star. For sure the Pirates pitching philosophy has to change, and pitching coaches have to go.

The article says "The move to acquire Dickerson from the Pirates for international bonus allotments and salary relief proved to be a nice pickup for the Phillies"

Why does a team near the bottom of MLB in payroll need salary relief?

They did the same thing a couple years ago when they waived Nicasio to save about $600,000, which is chump change in MLB. It seems there must be a standing policy in the organization to have Nutting's bean counters figure out ways to save every possible penny.

I thought the Bucs were supposed to get a ptbnl too. Salary relief is bad in this case as that means the Bucs got less than they otherwise would have.
