Former Pirate utility man Gary Kolb died last night. He played for the Bucs in 1968-69 and played every position for them except 1B, SS and P. In the minors he once played every position for an inning (like Campaneris and Tovar did in the majors).

I remember Gary Kolb, he was a super utility sub. May he Rest In Peace.

I took quite a liking to Kolb. His versatility really impressed me. I saw him catch a game at Forbes Field on 7/11/68 when Jerry May was hurt (catching Bob Veale must have been challenging when you're not a full time catcher). I used to listen to as many games as possible back then and I always perked up when Kolb started or PH. He has always been a favorite of mine. I'm acquainted with his daughter via Facebook and a couple years ago she told him I was a big fan of his and he sent me an autographed card (after replying to her "So he's the one."). ;D

Kolb has the distinction of being the player who pinch ran for Stan Musial after Musial singled in the final AB of his career, and also of having once been traded for Bob Uecker.

Meadows has really cooled off for TB. In his last 30 games he's hitting .202 (24 for 119, no HRs). I wonder if pitchers have found a weakness to exploit.

Despite his recent slump, Meadows in an All-Star. Good for him! :)

Casey Sadler is joining the Dodgers bullpen. Good enough for first place Dodgers, but it appears the Bucs were not interested in a reunion.

Just noticed some stats for Nick Kingham since he left the Bucs. He is 2-1, has pitched 18 innings, and has an era of 3.50. Not too bad of a beginning with Toronto.

He got off to a rough start with Toronto serving up a HR on the first pitch he threw for them and being scored upon in 5 of his first 8 relief appearances. His last 2 games have been better, giving up no runs in a total of 4.2 innings. Still a SSS so his Toronto ERA is fluctuating a lot based on every outing.

Just saw on MLB Trade Rumors he was designated for assignment. Wow!
