Quite a few former Pirates on the World Series roster...Dodgers-David Freese and Red Sox Steve Pearce, Brock Holt...Amazing how players go to other teams and fit right in and win. Just wish the folks who run our club would have the sense to put together a roster mixing home grown players with vets. It just takes management with baseball sense and a front office who is willing to take the chance...Bet'em Bucs 8-)

Just heard that in the history of World Series only two players won the MVP whenever they played for two teams in the same season. Steve Peace is one of the players and another former Pirate , Donn Clendenon is the other player.

Wait, so we would have been in the Red Sox position if only we were smart enough to keep Steve Pearce on the roster for ten years? ???

A lot of teams could have been in that position. After 5 uneventful years with the Pirates thru 2011, Pearce spent 2012 this way:

Spring training Twins (released).

Signed by Yankees.

Sold to Orioles.

Picked up by Astros on waivers.

Sold back to Yankees.

Reacquired by Orioles on waivers.

That was just 2012.

The Orioles kept him as a utility player but released on on 4/27/14. Orioles re-signed him 2 days later when Chris Davis was injured.

Since then he's been with Tampa, the Orioles (again), the Blue Jays and finally the Red Sox.

I've always liked Pearce and hoped he would finally have a successful career. He reminds me of late blooming hitters like Bill Robinson and Mike Easler. He's now 35 and has a World Series MVP trophy. Awesome!!!

Pearce's 3 WS HRs is matched in Pirate history only by Willie Stargell. Stargell hit 3 in 1979 but none in 1971. Fred Clarke hit 2 in 1909. Maz hit 2 in 1960. Clemente and Robertson each hit 2 in 1971.

I remember Pearce getting traded for a minor league in 2016, and thinking it was probably a pretty big day for him because he had finally been dealt for talent.

David Freese has signed a new deal with the Dodgers for 4.5 million with a 500,000 buyout.

Darn good player Freese. Wish the Brain Thrust had valued him and kept him a Buc. He is a gamer and a vet who knows how to win. Bucs had him and sold him off for nothing in my opinion. Typical Nutting move...Beat'em Bucs 8-)

Freese is a handy player to have. But he'll be 36 next April and was due 6 million for 2019 with a $500,000 buyout. After the trade, that became LA's responsibility. They paid the buyout and renegotiated a new 1 year deal for 5 million. So Freese gets 5.5 million instead of 6 million and LA keeps him while saving $500,000. I doubt Freese would have taken a reduction to stay with the Pirates. And 5.5 million is chump change for LA, as they had the 3rd highest payroll in MLB at 199.5 mil. Pirates were 27th at 91 mil. Freese's 5.5 mil would be 2.7% of LA's 2018 payroll but 6% of the Pirates'. Freese already said last year he needed to play less due to his age. And he'll be another year older at an age most players are thru. If he fizzles out in 2019, his salary won't matter to LA. But it would hamstring the Pirates. Money rules MLB. LA has it and spends it. The Pirates can't compete with that.
