The strange journey of Andrew Knapp:

Released by Reds on April 3rd and almost immediately signed by Pirates (April 6) to back up Roberto Perez. Pirates #2 catcher spot was open because Michael Perez had been DFA'd and outrighted to Indy.

Roberto Perez sustains significant injury opening the door for his backup to become starter.

Pirates recall Michael Perez and make him the starter with Knapp as his backup.

Pirates DFA Knapp and add Heineman.

So they didn't want Knapp to start and leapfrogged Michael Perez over him when Roberto Perez was injured. And then they didn't want Knapp to be the backup either. I wonder if Knapp was unhappy backing up Michael Perez instead of being named the starter.

Knapp's has a .210 career batting average over 6yrs. Perez was

here last season and probably knows the pitching staff better. Knapp shouldn't expect to have the #1 position handed to him

M. Perez has a career BA of .181 over 5 years. And if familiarity with the staff was the priority, there was no reason to DFA Perez and sign Knapp to replace him. And after signing Knapp to back up Roberto Perez, they DFA him because they don't want him backing up Michael Perez. The whole thing seems strange to me.

Saw this in the Trib:

Knapp fell out of favor after he was ejected in the sixth inning in the first game of a doubleheader May 7 at Cincinnati. That put the Pirates in a bad spot when Roberto Perez was injured in the eighth inning and infielder Josh VanMeter was forced to catch as the Reds scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth in the 9-2 win.

Looks like Knapp caused some problems for himself that ultimately led to being replaced.
