I was always a fan of Ken Boyer. I believe he belongs in the HOF. He was NL MVP in 1964. Outstanding fielder at 3B with 5 GGs. 7 x All-Star. .287 career hitter with 282 HRs and 1,141 RBIs with 8 seasons of 90+ RBIs. Led MLB in RBIs in 1964 with 119. Had 23+ HRs 8 times as well as seasons of 18 and 19. Topped .300 5 times and in the .290s 2 other times.

There was a little stretch, when Sanchez was hitting .300 in the low minors, that I thought NH might be a genius.

When they drafted him they expected him to be a standout defensive catcher with questionable hitting. In the minors he started hitting but showing flaws defensively.

I agree, Boyer is a no brainer for hall of very good and could be a hall of famer.

if he would have made it to 300 homers he would be in. his years after 1965 hurt him more than help him as far as HOF goes.

OTOH, Brooks Robinson had fewer HRs (268) and a much lower BA (.267). Of course Brooks was the Bill Mazeroski of 3Bmen and had 16 GGs. Brooks was a 1st ballot HOFer but Boyer, who was a better hitter and an excellent fielder in his own right, never got in. If Boyer had just been an average fielder I would say he didn't belong. But he was the total package and it seems maybe he's been denied the HOF because he wasn't as incredible fielding as Brooks when no one else was either and Boyer was one of the best fielding and hitting 3Bmen of his era. Boyer was very much like Ron Santo but without the 342 HRs. So I agree with you that 300 would've have done it. But I believe he should be in anyway with his brilliant career and 282 HRs.

I remember Bob Prince raving about George Spriggs when he came up in Sept 1965 so I thought he was going to become a star. But he never really made it. Looking back now I see he had some outstanding years in the minors but never spent an entire season in the majors and toiled in AAA until age 35.

It seems Spriggs was one lot the last players to come out of what was left of the Negro Leagues, so he didn't get to the regular minors till he was 26.
