Talk about shocking the world
Does anyone think there is even a 1% chance of this happening

Am I right that Sasaki’s limited to a $10 million signing bonus and a $2 million salary? If that’s the case, the Pirates are absolutely able to sign him. It would be a matter of selling him on the benefits of living in Pittsburgh and the chances of the Pirates being able to compete. If I were his agent, I’d tell the Pirates Sasaki will sign with the club but only if the team acquires a legitimate hitter or two.

The highest bonus is 10 million, and they sign a standard contract for league minimum and 6 years of control. However, teams can only spend up to the amount they have in international bonus pool money. This is why the Dodgers stopped courting the short stop from the DR, because they apparently are going to offer Sasaki their entire allotment.

The Dodgers are at the low end, with $5,146,200 available (according to Baseball America https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories ... -mlb-team/)

The Pirates are in the second tier of $6,908,600.

Looking at the list, I can see where a lot of teams are actually in this.

According to MLB.com, Sasaki has narrowed his options to three teams, the Dodgers, Padres, and Jays. Of the other five teams who were known to have met with him over the past few weeks, the Pirates were not among them.

With the restrictions you describe, I don't see money as the issue. The difference between signing with the Dodgers or the Pirates is minor and can be made up by playoff money the Dodgers are likely to earn this coming season. And the Dodgers could very well make an agreement with him now to sign him to contract next offseason that's more in line with his talents. Sasaki may not make the money he wants this year but he could very well get the contract he really wants next year, and he'll likely get that from LA and not the Pirates.

Reports seem to suggest he's narrowed his choices to the Dodgers, Padres, and Blue Jays. Given that the Dodgers are stalling their promised international players, it would seem they have to be the favorites. (Note that the "stalling off" enabled the Pirates to get a commitment for Morel [?]. We only had to pay $900,000 more than the Dodgers had offered him. That's apparently the premium to come to Pittsburgh.)

Has Hayes suggested before that he was dissatisfied in Pittsburgh?

If Hayes wants out, then move on from him. Triolo can play just as well at third base. Sure he doesn’t hit as well, but since Hayes signed his contract in 2022, he has missed a lot of games. I am not sure if he will ever overcome the back issues. It is always upsetting when a player, and in this case is under contract, asks to be traded.

I see the Giants are talking with Randal Grichuk. I cannot believe the Pirates are going to lay an egg, and not bring on board a corner outfielder which they darn well need. I know Nutting is cheap, but by not bringing in a good corner outfielder is idiotic in my opinion.
