Just playing devil's advocate here, but did anyone hear or read anything from Castro, what he was thinking?

I was wondering if he thought it was an infield fly situation. Castro has never once shown a propensity for dogging it. In fact, I think he tries too hard which contributes to a lot of the errors we've been seeing, he puts a lot of pressure on himself.

As for the rest, I'm not sure whether I should agree with Shelton's decision.  I'd really want to agree with Dave- take Castro out right then & there.

Yes, twice. Fortunately we won both. However, even if we had lost, I would do it again. Like Shelton said, physical errors are going to happen. Mental or behavioral issues are unacceptable.

Dave, you were the coach.  Was there ever a time when you risked a loss (which, of course would hurt your team) to make your point (that helps your team in the long run.)?

My immediate reaction was that Castro should be taken out. In fact, I thought the best thing would have been to let him take his position to start the next inning and then pull him off the field before the 1st batter to embarrass him.

But I see Shelton's point with a DH there are 9 nonpitcher starters and a 3-man bench is problematic. And one of them is the backup catcher so it's essentially a 2-man bench. And Vogelsong looked like he was limping when they ran for him. So Castillo had to be saved for later. This idea of 14 pitchers and a 3-man bench is idiotic. The MLB limit of 13 pitchers goers into effect June 19. Can't happen soon enough.

Not only take him out right away, but have him sit for another couple of games just watching, not allowing him an opportunity to help his teammates.

The rest of this year is about teaching the newly arriving young guys. Lesson #1 is that it takes the whole roster to win. Letting down teammates with selfish decisions or lazy actions can never happen. Teach Castro, and all the others, that lesson now, during this last rebuilding year so that it doesn't happen when the team becomes competitive.

Agree that if Castro was "lazy," it would have shown before yesterday.

When Shelton referred to it as a "mental error," I interpreted it as "a mistake," not a lack of hustle. Everyone makes them.

I think we should start a petition. The Pirates should be allowed to call it "the target." They just can't get the hang of "first base," I guess. They should've let Lloyd take it with him.

I'm going to buy you some computer lessons.  ;)

I agree with Surg that this wasn't "Behavioral."  It was a "Mental" mistake.  I base it on Shelton's comments, though it is possible that he said what he did to downplay things.

Some of our young players' mistakes are being unaware of fundamental rules in the moment of play.  We need to play smarter baseball.  The Diamondbacks knew what to do.  The Pirates should, too.

I'm not sure how to improve it because there are so many situations that it would take a long time to go over them.

We know every one of the mistakes we make because we focus on our team.  I'm sure that other teams mess up, too.  How often?  Who knows?

It doesn't take a genius to know that you are to run EVERYTHING out. I am talking about lack of hustle. Sorry, I can't excuse that.

BTW I'll say it here, because no one seems to have noticed outside of me, but Bednar was NL Reliever of the month. As I also posted, Clay Holmes was AL Reliever of the month.

Now, on to a topic regarding this game. How is the feeling among you all of the Taillon trade right now? Refresher, the Pirates got Roansy Contreras, Miguel Yajure, Canaan Smith-Njigba, and Maikol Escotto. Yajure has pitched for the Bucs, Smith-Njigba is in AAA with okay numbers, Escotto is in Greensboro doing poorly right now, but he's only 20 and playing high A ball.

If Contreras keeps it going, stays healthy, at the very least it's a lateral move.

I see this as both teams having benefitted by the trade....and, probably both players, too. Both have done what the acquiring teams obtained them to do.

I think it's a win for the Pirates considering Taillon is a FA next year. Taillon was mediocre last year and is now doing great. This might be his last year for NY. It would most certainly have been his last year with the Pirates.
