Luplow could have a future. I'd like to see what he can do. I know he doesn't have many Triple A at bats, but overall he had a pretty good 2017.

And Cervelli is better than Diaz.

No, Cervelli isn't.  The guy has zero power; isn't a good hitter and is fragile.

Sure, you want to bring in a bench player to add to our big time collection of bench players.  Bench players litter this roster champ.

So, this was your response to another poster (not me, of course):

"I would take Melky's bat over anything we have or looking at as a third starting OF, or 4th."

I say I would bring in a bench player with some pop and then you disagree?

Yes, Cervelli is better than Diaz.  You said Cervelli has no power, but Diaz does?  Diaz hasn't hit major league pitching and has an OPS under .700 in the minors.  Why do you think Diaz is a better hitter than Cervelli?  The stats certainly don't help your case.

We don't have an internal candidate that is better than Cabrera.  That is what I'm saying.  Luplow, your favorite?  Nope.  Nor anyone else.  The options that Pittsburgh is looking at suck.  They aren't trying to bring in something good. The best of the names mentioned is Cabrera or Carlos Gomez. They would rather go worse. I want a real player that can do something.  Not some reclamation project.  You are all about bringing in reserves/bench players.  I want a real player, one with a track record that can START and produce.  That is the difference between us.

Diaz, if they gave him a chance, is a better catcher than Cervelli.  Nothing like paying 10.3 million  for a catcher that is lucky to have 280 at bats because of fragility and a lack of power.  Our catching options here suck.  I would rather see what Diaz could do full time.  I'm sure he would hit more than 5 homers and drive in 31.

Alright SCBucco, I told myself next time you disparage Jordan Luplow in one of your posts I am going to pose the question Why?

Luplow had a great year in 2017. At first stops in AA and AAA he put up numbers both Management and Fans could only hope for. Moreover, take an overlay of his 2017 numbers and put them under Austin Meadow’s name. The baseball world would still be gaga. Better yet, put those numbers under the names of Cole Tucker…or Ke’Bryan Hayes…or Kevin Newman. Any of those three would still be included in each and every Top 100 prospect list in the industry---probably Top 50.

Somehow those numbers don’t earn Luplow the same acclaim. From reading the comments on this board, I get the subtle impression many people are high on Luplow, while others, like you, are pretty apathetic to both his 2017 and his prospect status. I for one see his productivity as a great glimmer of hope for a system that seems to lack many sure thing prospects. I understand, Luplow may never again produce a statistical year like he did in 2017, but I would think most Pirate fans would be eager to see if he could build upon it in the majors.

OK SCBucco. It’s like Colonel Jessup in A Few Good Men, I think you want to answer the question about Luplow? What about him don’t you like?

Yes  I am calling cervelli a baby because he gets "a little dinged up".   His games played in his career is insane.   Nobody who is not relatively a baby misses that much time.

He wants to man up and show what a tough guy he is? He can start by catching 100 games.  I don't know what his teammates have to do with it?  What kind of a teammate would say anything except positive things about the others toughness and work ethic?

You can only give these walked wounded the benefit of the doubt so many times...  Especially when it's multiple things. You play baseball, for cripes sake.

That's just it. I think he gets a lot dinged up and plays through a lot of pain/injuries.

I remember people getting on me because I wanted Neil Walker to play through his back pain. It was the end of the season stretch run. The Pirates downplayed his injury as stiffness and tightness. It turned out that Walker had a more serious issue (and still does). My point is, the fans aren't told the entire story. A lot of injuries are hidden to the public.
