I have always liked JHay, but I think management likes their money more. They won't cough up 8 figures for JHay. Quite frankly, I wonder if someone like Reyes couldn't put up similar numbers -- at minimum salary?

I mean maybe, it always just seemed to be that he's been on of their favorites.

It's alarming that our offensive is largely being driven by, not the "new core", but by the older short timers. Meadows being an exception.

I hope we don't lose 90.

I'll tell you who it's not:  Dickerson, Cervelli, Marte, and Harrison (in 31 games).    There's your top 4 position players by WAR so far in 2018.  No other player in on pace for more than 1.5 for the season, some are sub-replacement level.  (meadows excluded in his tiny sample)

Well I'd probably say Bell Meadows and Colin Moran (who has been so-so).  We didn't have a complete overhaul rebuild where we turned over most of the starting lineup.  The "New Guys" make up about 2 1/2 of 8.  Bell is certainly a key by any standard and needs to be better than he is.

OK so based on that,  the core is Bell, Meadows, and Moran.

- Bell has put up a 0.5 WAR in 1000+  major league plate appearances.  25 years old

-Meadows looks outstanding in a very small sample  23 years old

-Moran is being hidden from lefties, and still is below NL average for 3b.    Likely the worst defensive 3bman in baseball, or close to it.  25 years old

yeah.  I'm concerned for ANY future lineup when this is who we're building around.  But what do I know. Players always get better, right? (sans: Bell, Polanco, Adam Frazier)

I don't count on rookies to carry the team. I don't rely on second year guys either. They are small pieces that need to hold their own until they are more established and ready to be big pieces.

Bell has been disappointing so far this year. He should at least do what he did last year or close to it. Moran has been a top hitting rookie this year. He is holding his own just fine. Meadows started off very hot. Meadows looks like the player we've been waiting for, but I still expect some slumps and dry spells. The new core is very young and will probably get younger too.

yes but again that's all based on Bell, who everyone agrees has been disappointing.  There isn't some giant "Young Core" all of which are failing.  This is basically the same team as last year (take that as you will).  It's the same core as before with a few new faces added in.

I think the offense is not the thing to be worried about right now.  Even if they eventually go, the "old core" will not all disappear overnight.  It is right and good (and normal) that the veterans are leading the way for the rookies.

Be worried about the pitching, most of whom have the upside of mediocrity.

Nah. Pitchers take longer to develop.  The young rotation is holding it's own statistically, minus Taillon who is underperforming expectations. This is a rotation that could get better and isn't that terrible even now

The lineup is going to get a shot in the arm when Kang comes back, but trades should remove a few of the top position player performers by the end of next month.

I know what I would do. And depending on Bell and Moran to anchor the corners of a future infield is not it. Unless I wanted to just be a so-so offense
