VanMeter is 4 for his last 15.
Reynolds, who no one criticizes on this board other than me, is 0 for his last 14.
VanMeter has 4 RBI in 61 AB, most coming from the bottom of the order. Reynolds, who no one criticizes on this board other than me, has all of 6 RBI in 115 AB's, most of them coming hitting second or third.
Yeah, VanMeter, I agree is no wonderkind. His defense has been better then Reynolds, who seemingly is incapable of reading a bounce off the outfield wall.
I dare say for all the flack VanMeter gets on the board, he's done a shitload more lately to help the team win then Reynolds.
Guess all his snide sideways comments about his contract status, which incidentally is part of the CBA, you know, the arbitration process, is coming back to bite him in the ass. But he loved getting yinzers bashing management about "only 625K" and never once simply said no big deal it's the process.
Once all the yinzers were shut up and put back to the closet, not a peep from them about the enormous raise he received. Yinzers even tried spinning that!
Maybe 2020 is the real Reynolds. I hope he starts hitting. Despite a nice start as far as hits goes for may, he still has only driven in himself with 2 home runs. Even during his little hitting streak, he consistently SUCKED when there were men on base, runners in scoring position, only to strikeout, hit into double plays, pop out to short.
Time to start banging on the REAL problem with the Pirates offense. Number 10. His robin to his batman is Yoshi.
Oh, but I've seen criticism of Yoshi. Guess Reynolds gets the yinzer pass.
Reynolds' prolonged slump is certainly one of many things hurting the team. But I'm not going to start bashing Shelton for playing him because he's shown the kind of player he can be. But I would move him to the lower part of the lineup for the time being. He was a consistent .300+ hitter at every minor league level and, when called up to the Pirates in early 2019 due to injuries to OFers, he immediately started hitting and never stopped. As a rookie he hit .314 with 16 HRs and a .377 OBP. He had an awful season in 2020 but so did a lot of normally good hitting major leaguers. It was a bizarre 60 game season with no fans, piped in noise, numerous last minute covid postponements and countless covid restrictions and distractions. With a normal season in 2021, he bounced right back hitting .302 with 24 HRs, 90 RBIs and a .390 OBP. It's frustrating seeing him failing to hit now but he's proven what an outstanding hitter he can be. So there's reason to believe it's just a matter of time before he starts hitting again. And if Reynolds made any "snide sideways comments about his contract status" or "loved getting yinzers bashing management" about his arbitration situation, I must have missed it.
It's different with VanMeter. He's hitting .180. Not even as good as Reynolds' disappointing .209. VanMeter's career BA is .209 and his career best was .237. While Reynolds struggles, we are waiting for him to hit because we know he can. While VanMeter struggles, we are not waiting for him to hit because he has never been able to. He is simply a marginal player with little potential who never seems as good as whoever is on the bench. There is nothing to be gained by starting VanMeter. His ceiling is very low. There is something to be gained by playing Reynolds because he's proven he has the skills to be an outstanding hitter.
Yoshi is another one who was counted on to produce this year but has disappointed. He did well in a SSS for the Pirates last year after being a flop for both TB and LA. The fear now about him is that the SSS with the Pirates last year was more of a fluke and the real Yoshi is the one who failed with 2 other organizations and so far this season with the Pirates. People are waiting for Reynolds to hit like his track record shows he can. But with Yoshi at this point it's unclear if his track record indicates he can hit (in 127 ABs as a Pirate last season) or cannot hit based on everything he's done before and since that brief period.
