But could they ever improve the hitting and pitching enough to overcome the poor defense?  :D

Let’s not get carried away.

This was the 34th time the Pirates have scored either 0 or 1 run. They have scored 2 or fewer runs 57 times in 132 games (43%).

They have the fewest runs, hits, doubles and total bases in the NL. They have the worst team BA, OBP and SLG in the NL. Ironically, in addition to scoring the fewest runs they have also left the fewest runners on base. They simply don't get on base. But when they do, they have the 2nd highest number of runners caught stealing.

They even have the NL's lowest number of sac flies. They rarely get a runner at 3B and when they do, they can't hit the ball to the outfield. On the plus side, they are one of the NL's best at not grounding into DPs. But you can't ground into a DP when you don't have anyone on base.

So you're saying that, other than the fact that the Pirates are exceptionally bad at everything offense-related, they'd have a good offense?

They are the envy of every other team for exit velocity.

To have all of those numbers at the same time is nearly overwhelmingly hard to believe in the negative sense, of course.

As the game ended, I wondered to myself-

A) It's been written before and been wrong, but I'll take the risk again:  It's nearly impossible to get any worse (meaning- next season.)

B) If you're Ben- with so much improvement to make (that should have started two seasons ago, IMO)- which area do you concentrate on improving first?

C) Which area do you concentrate on improving the most?

This off-season will say a lot.  Just not sure what it will tell us.
