Why are the Pirates not in on Chris Sale?

Thus, my note to Pirate management:  Pitching isn't cheap and good pitching clearly isn't cheap.

I continue to believe that the best route is to trade Cutch to the Nats for good prospects and then to flip some of the newly acquired talent with talent in the existing system to the White Sox for Sales.

Moving Cutch frees up the money to take on Sale and to help make it easier to absorb Nova's salary, and by increasing the minor league talent pool you can better afford to trade for Sale without bankrupting the minor league system.

Frankly, I want to hold onto Meadows as the heir apparent for the OF (assuming Bell is at first at some point), and would prefer to hang onto Glasnow, but I would consider moving him if it reduced the cost in other prospects.

At this point, the White Sox have the right to request and expect that they will receive a boatload of talent for Sale.

Yes! At least this is trying to compete and I like your out-of-the-box approach. The problem is, I don't think Cutch brings enough in value to pull off your plan (who would have believed that a year ago?). I keep coming back to Marte because he probably returns more value then anyone else on the team.

This is a situation where three teams could actually be involved.

Maybe we're looking at moving at the wrong player.

Gerrit Cole would be an awfully tempting pitcher in this market.

Frankly, I would have no problem in moving Cole, especially with this market for pitching.

And if by chance Neal is not serious about contending in 2017/18 then he MUST move Cole.

Goilito and Robles might be getting Sale to the Nationals. Rumor is that discussions are deep.

Apparently the Nats think they can beat the Cubs....

Would you think that Lopez and Ross would be enough for the Pirates to make the trade?

This should also show the Pirates how teams value pitching. Chris Sale hasn't won the Cy Young (been in the top6 the last five years) but McCutchen has won the MVP and the Nationals need an outfielder more than a pitcher.

And yes, I hate the "can't beat the Cubs, so why try" attitude.

I doubt it. But in the end the Pirates may take the best deal they can make. I don't really know what the expected ceiling for either may be. I know there are some that think Lopez will eventually be a reliever.

In the end I think the answer depends on whether the Pirates are rebuilding or trying to win. If they want to win I don't like this trade.
