I'm all for making this kind of move with Holmes if the Pirates were in a stretch of 21 games in 20 days, or a stretch of multiple double-headers.

But the staff is red-hot right now AND the schedule is aleady giving them multiple days off during this stretch, which allows them all to push back a start and get an extra day.

Just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Seems like the Pirates are over-thinking this. Yea I don’t agree with it at all. They just had two days off last week and didn’t really use the bullpen a lot in Colorado where they pitched a lot. So yea this makes zero sense. Maybe it will work out and Holmes will be good it better for Hurdle’s sake. I just don’t know how many more times the Pirates are going to have to overcome Hurdle and his obsession to rest guys over trying to win. This move again makes zero sense and I’ll stick by that. What other team in Major League Baseball would do this when their team is right in the middle of a pennant race as every single game and game you win is so crucial?? I don’t think many would.

I just don't see that an extra day is going to be that helpful.

It also sets up the possibility that the bullpen may be used more.

As far as innings pitched goes

Taillon has pitched 134 which is 12th in the NL. Max Scherzer has started one more game and has pitched 161.

Nova is 26 in NL with 124

Williams 37th with 116

Regarding the PTBNL ... since Newman is our hottest prospect right now, I've resigned myself to the fact that it's probably going to be him.

And I won't be thrilled about it. I'm good with the trade and I commend our front office for going out and making something happen and getting Archer.

If the price were Glasnow, Meadows and a low-level prospect, I would consider that fair value.

If it's Glasnow, Meadows plus one of our top 10 prospects, and I know it will be, then I feel like we overpaid.

We are desperate for middle infielders ... and I don't want to give the Rays one of best prospects at that position.

We also need a continual pipeline of high-end starting pitching possibilities ... and I don't like the idea of losing someline like Baz, when we've already traded Hearn.

Just think about it like we got Dickerson as part of the deal too. ;)

don't forget the Bucs owe the Rangers a player too.

I'm betting that's one of the 2017 draft picks not names Baz, Bolton or Mitchell.

So if we provided a list of players on the 40, the trade couldn't finalize until after the waiver deadline ends, or they would need to pass through waivers.  While at the same time, we suppsedly couldn't call up any on the list to fill in for injury.

Seems if a team provides a list of players on the 40, they're making it tough on themselves
From listening to many of NH comments I don’t think either player to be named in the two trades are not on the 40 man roster. I think they are minor leaguers and at least one of them is a player most fans who follow the Bucs know his name.

Why don't they just announce it? I've never understood the concept of a PTBNL. They obviously know who it is.

I guess sometimes the team has a list to choose from (though you're right in this instance it sounds like there is a specific target in mind).

What doesn't make sense to me is that if they had a player in mind who was on the 40, they could have done it then, before August 1st.

They almost had to have a list of guys.
