Be steady. Prevent runs. rely on strengths (pitching) and support that strength with the best defense you can reasonably field. Infield defense is already suspect, don't kill the OF too.
Why put Moran or Newman in the outfield? They have the money, get a veteran outfielder, send Brault to Indy, play Melky in right, and the new player in left. Take advantage of the starting pitchers that you have, and get an outfielder in order that the season does not go into the dumper before the regular outfielders return from the Injured reserve list.
Newman could probably do it, but why would you? What's he going to hit to make that worthwhile?
I'm not opposed to throwing anyone into RF in a pinch, but you cannot put Moran or Melky in LF at PNC. To me, you're spotting at least a hit or two per game doing that. Both are just OK hitters, nothing to write home about, so I don't see the point in it.
Exactly it makes no sense which is why taking a look at either Joey Bats or Chris Young makes sense. Combined both have hit 535 homeruns in the Major League’s and neither would be a worse option then guys like Shuck,Moran,Reyes or even Melky.
