DuRapau pitches 2 great innings and is then removed so that Brault can enter and.....walk everyone.  Hurdle just makes no sense sometimes the things he does. Durapau could have at least started the 3rd inning and if he got in trouble then you can take him out. No reason in the world to let Brault start that 3rd inning and the Pirates were very lucky things didn’t end up much worse for Brault after he walked 3 batters.

It's one of Hurdle's many, many formulas that a pitcher should never enter in the middle of an inning except as a last resort. So if a pitcher is doing well but he suspects that pitcher might not make it thru the next inning (pitch count or whatever), he prefers to substitute an inferior pitcher to start the next inning. Somehow, he finds that preferable to seeing what the effective pitcher could do in 1 more inning because he can't risk a mid-inning pitching change.

I thought it was nasty as well. Durapau isn’t the most talented guy but it looks like he knows how to pitch and makes the most of his stuff.

I don't know why Hurdle is trying to get 3 innings out of Brault.

I’ve got to believe they were planning to use Liriano tonight, but Williams' injury threw a wrench into that plan.

This HP ump is so inept that pitchers have no idea where to throw the ball and batters have no idea whether they need to swing or not.

Seriously...if this is the Liriano they’ve got, they don’t need him spot starting until Taillon/Williams are back. They need to stretch him out and give him the ball every five days for the rest of the year. Stick Archer in the pen. This is 2013-2015 Liriano. He’s straight filthy right now.

32nd rounder starts it, 29th rounder ends it. Love the long shot players. And Hartlieb is the first player from the 2016 draft class to make it. Gotta like how fast he has moved through the minors and he showed great stuff tonight.

DuRapau looks like he can bulldog through an inning at about any time. And geez, Hartlieb's sink is really nasty. Maybe these two can really help solidify the pen with Liriano, Vasquez and Crick.

The Pirates have now won 11 of their last 17 games and are now 11-9 in this stretch of 16 of 21 games on the road that started 3 weeks ago in LA. So despite the injuries this team continues to find ways to win games and have a shot finish this trip with 7 out of 11 wins which I never would have believed after the Rangers game they blew before this road trip.

Great post. I was thinking that the Pirates pitching tonight represented the Ductape And Chicken Wire Hall Of Fame, an unlikely bunch of All Stars for a night. It was a fun night watching this motley crew shine.

And I agree about DeRapue and Hartlieb.
