Looking Ahead To The 40 Man Winter Roster

I'm letting the following guys leave the 40-man:

Chris Archer

Tyler Bashlor

Michael Feliz

Carson Fulmer

Dovydas Neverauskas

Sean Poppen

Yacksel Rios

Brandon Waddell

Luke Maile

JR Murphy

Kevin Kramer

Jason Martin

Due to guys coming off the IR, that leaves 37 guys on the 40-man. If Oneil Cruz is on a restricted list, make that 36.

I try very hard to trade the following for young talent - hopefully including a catcher:

Rich Rodriguez or Chris Stratton

Adam Frazier or Erik Gonzalez

One of our starting pitchers

I'm not sure who's Rule 5 eligible this year, but we better have a handful of spots available. After all, we're rebuilding! I'll post my Rule 5 additions in another post.

I think I've given up on common sense and now expect Neverauskas to have a 15 year career with the Pirates as the worst pitcher in MLB every year. It's the only way of making sure the Bucs keep open the pipeline to the pitching rich nation of Lithuania.

That is a good group you picked , but how about Kyle Crick. It seems like he has lost velocity since 2018.

Feel like we're selling low on him, but he might be a sweetener and I wouldn't say no if someone asked with a decent return.

I think Crick's control issues render him fairly worthless. He is another guy the Pirates took a chance on. His minor league stats were impressive for hits vs innings but were always marred by poor control. When the Pirates got him in 2018 he had a very uncharacteristic year in terms of good control. But the next year he returned to being a walk machine and in his brief appearances in 2020 he walked 4 in 5.2 innings. So in his 10 professional seasons, he's had terrible control for 9 of them. That's a recipe for disaster coming in from the bullpen. I would offer him up and take whatever I could get. Barring that, I would release him.

OK, thanks to Wilbur Miller's article over at Pirate Prospects, I got a list of the eligibles, and came up with my handful:

Rodolfo Castro INF

Braeden Ogle LHP

Blake Weiman LHRP

Max Kranick RHSP

Santiago Florez RHSP

Just missed:

Lolo Sanchez OF

Yerry De Los Santos RHRP

Osvaldo Bido RHSP

Summary: Castro is the only position player who is a lock to be added. We need to clear out a couple more pitchers to add the four I mentioned above. Hopefully we will trade 2 away to make room. Can't have 25 pitchers on the 40-man!

Got to keep Neveraskus because I need a whipping boy ... but I'm sure I can find someone else. I agree with your list, but I don't understand the claim Fulmer then let him go and after passed around by one or two other teams, they get him back and I don't understand the Mary Poppen addition only to decide to cut him loose.

All of the position players I had being dropped off the 40-man were let go, and we added a catcher without making a trade. If we add Rodolfo Castro, that's 18 position players. There's probably room for a free agent.

I was surprised they let Tropeano go and he was quickly added by the Mets. I had Rios and Waddell being let go and they were. Surprised that the Twins picked up Waddell, but he is a lefty.

Mystified that Neverauskas is still with us but there are more DFA's coming this weekend. I expect the following will be leaving:

Archer

Bashlor

Feliz

Fulmer

Neverauskas

Poppen

And the following will be added:

Kranick

Weiman

Ogle

Florez

Hope we only keep 39 on the 40-man because we'll have the #1 pick in the Rule 5. (Nick Burdi was a Rule 5 guy)

Two more moves need to be made today in order to add the players on the IL to the 40 man roster. I am going to guess that Neverauskis will be one of the casualties.
