Not surprising, but no one secured the required 75% to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

Schilling was the top vote getter with just over 71%

Bonds and Clemens were at about 61 & 60% respectively, and Scott Rolen was 4th at ~55%.

Schilling, Bonds and Clemens will now head into their 10th and final year on the writers ballot.

14 Blank ballots were turned in.

It's almost as if since there's one more year for the big three, make them wait, and let the 2020 class get their long awaited moment in the sun on their own stage.

Schilling deserves to be in HOF. If he put up very good numbers after turning 34, 3 20 times 20 game winner. Almost half of his wins.

He will make it someday.

Schilling should absolutely get in. So should Bonds. So should Clemens. Yes, I know the latter two cheated. Still amazing talents. Steroids or not, Bonds holds the records for single season home run king and career home run king. That guy needs to be in the hall.

I just can't separate the records from the steroids. When McGwire started his steroid driven HR chase with 52, 58, 70 and 65 at age 32-35 in 1996-99 (his previous high was 49 at age 23 and before 1996 he had topped 39 only twice), Bonds responded with the highest 5 year HR total of his career with 49, 73, 46, 45 and 45 at ages 35-39 in 2000-2004. Prior to that his previous high was 46 at age 28 and he had topped 39 only 2 other times (42 and 40 in 1996-97). He says he didn't think what he was using was a steroid. Right. Maybe he just thought his athletic skills were getting better as he approached 40. IMHO it's terribly unfair to Ruth and Aaron to consider Bonds the HR king under those circumstances. I think McGwire, Sosa and Bonds made a mockery of the game. Ditto for any of those steroid guys including the pitchers. They made the decision to cheat. So if the price of benefitting via cheating is to not be in the HOF, I've got no problem with that.

And Ken Griffey, Jr. He could have recovered from injuries a lot more quickly under steroids. I don't respect any of those inflated records.

those records show how bad MLB was at drug enforcement.

Of course who knows how many Olympic records are tainted by drugs too.

Even without the steroid issue, you have a log of things that complicate direct comparison of career records. The ball is different, the height of the mound is different, ball park dimensions are different, even the perspective of players (e.g. trying to hit home runs all the time to trying to be an all round good player etc) is different. Put Clemente or Stargell in PNC park their whole career and give them the modern mindset of power power power and watch how many home runs they hit.

Also expansion. Most of the Pitchers in the NL today wouldn't be good enough to play in an eight team league.
