In some ways I think he's right.  Why waste time on players who'll be gone in two years?  On the other hand, if they play positions where there's no youngster ready to take over those positions, it's okay to keep an older player in hopes that he raises his stock for a trade in 2023.

It's a fluid situation, but I think Cherington will continue to stick with his plan to advance players through the system when he feels they're ready.  If a player shows he's ready sooner, maybe BC will advance him faster, like he did with Suwinski.  Trades of younger players who might be blocked by a better younger player could occur.  BC will make mistakes, as all GMs do.  But I think he'll make more good moves than bad.

I had a discussion with someone today who said he

would rather have Musgrove than Bednar. I said that

Musgrove is 8-2 and Bednar has 16 saves. Bednar could end

up with 30 plus saves. Musgrove could possibly win-16-18 games.

Both made the All Star Team. One pitches every 5 days. One, assuming the game is on the line, can pitch every other day or

back to back days. What do you guys think?

I believe good starting pitchers are more valuable than good closers. Saves are relatively easy to get. You only need to pitch 1 inning and if you have a 2 or 3 run lead you can even be scored upon and still get the save. A lot of pitchers could get saves if given the chance. That's why I strongly believe the old "fireman" role was much more valuable than the closer role. The closer waits for the rest of the team to give him a 9th inning lead. But a starting pitcher is instrumental in whether there will be a 9th inning lead for the closer to capitalize on for a save.

Well stated, but would Musgrove have a similar record with the Bucs? Probably not. Also, the Pirates received 4 players in that deal. I know however, that's not the issue here. Regardless, I respect your position

It's time. He's now 0 for his last 29. Maybe pitchers found a weakness and Suwinski needs to adjust. He skipped past AAA so some time there might be good for him.

Seems like he's been in a slump forever, but it was only 9 days ago he swatted the 2 run HR against the Yankees
