I agree a deal like that for a true staff ace shouldn’t break the bank for a major league club. But the reality is that Bob Nutting will never spend $20 million a year for any player, especially a pitcher whose next throw could be his last. He’ll never believe any player is worth that expenditure.
Unless the owners and players agree to new guidelines on how payrolls are established in order to create equity among the franchises, or the Pirates come under new ownership, what we’ve seen over the past 20+ years under Nutting’s ownership with regard to spending will continue. He has no reason to change and, once more, we Pirates fans are disregarded, ignored, and dismissed.
Do you mean that Nutting doesn"t have that fantasy of hoisting the World Series Trophy on National TV?
He might have that as a fantasy but, if it happens, it’ll be in spite of him. His GM, whether that be Cherington or someone in the future, will have to build a team of low cost players to make it happen. He sure won’t spend to do it.

Maybe we could send him instructions from the Tampa Bay Rays Manual

Verlander signs with the Astros. $25 mil with a $25 mil player option for 2023. I wish we had an owner who would shell out that kind of money for a broken down starting pitcher. >:( >:( >:(

Just a friendly suggestion.....couple recent posts edging eerily close to saying that we have a cheap owner. I've been told that it's frowned upon. Besides, it's criticizing him for not doing what we'd like him to do. Carry on.
$25 mil doesn't go as far as it used to!

The Pirates could benefit by following Tampa’s model, but better still would be acquiring some of the personnel the Rays have in their management group and on their coaching and development staffs. Those guys are doing the heavy lifting and they’ve been exceptionally successful.

Justin Verlander goes back to Houston for 25 million. A lot of money for someone his age and has had arm problems

You're a married guy. You know that 24 million of it goes to Kate, who draws fans with binoculars and cameras. 1 million goes to the hall of fame pitcher. Money well spent.

If the Astros owner agreed to pay Verlander that amount of money, then he must feel he’s worth it and will get an acceptable return for his money.
