Or was it they didn't want to pay $11.5 million for a bench player? How much were bench players getting this past off season?
I don't want Jed Lowrie starting next year. I'd rather have Freese, Harrison or Mercer.
Well they did pay Daniel Hudson 11M.

Sean Rodriguez was coming off of a (far and away) career year at age 31.
We don't seem to be keeping that in mind.
I liked him on the team but not under the assumption that we were going to get 2016 SROD going forward. That seems foolish. It also seems foolish to give him 11MM for .235 and 8 HR.

And why in 2015, the Pirates paid him $1.9 million. He still only got $2.5 million in 2016 as a free agent.

IIRC, didn't Rodriguez say he took the Braves' offer because they would give him a chance to start? So this time he signed for starter's money, not a backup's money.

Daniel Hudson ... Orlando Hudson ... same thing? I kid.

Yes, a big reason. But the Pirates wouldn't pay him still comes up. Even though most know the real reason.

I wonder which prospects the Blue Jays will give up to get the Astros to take him?

Yeah, that sounds familiar now that you mention it. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm trashing SROD. I liked him. Just wasn't that reasonable to keep him considering the offers/opportunities he got elsewhere.
Where the Pirates really went wrong with all of that is that the guy they were hoping would replace him has been a big fat zero.
