You hit the nail on the head with your definition. Trying to make things a bit less arbitrary or knowledgeable arbitrary would mean including the prospects performance when he has a bit of time in as a pro.

Right now Baz's prospect status if very arbitrary and is based on projection (what he could become in the future) rather than what he has done in the pros.

Me I would look at someone who has spent a lot of time concentrating on prospects. One who not only sees the prospect more than once but who talks to scouts and evaluators for the team and even other teams. Personally, I have no real trust in what a bunch of die hard Pirate fans say on a Forum. Many are not as well versed in evaluating prospects.

If someone like Baz is always ranked in the top 15 on all the mock draft boards and compared to already established players, I use/dissect that information and then judge that info compared to others already in the organization.

Metal bats vs wood, college competition vs pro. It just seems a bit of a stretch to put a newly drafted prospect in the top 10 or even 20 of an organization without some time to see how he handles the transition. I would no more put them there than I would someone in the Dominican summer league.

I've never been a fan of plugging in as prospects guys who've just been drafted. There is a world of difference between amateur baseball and the professional game. Whatever "potential" is there is more than off-set by the low probability of success.

If I counted correctly, it looks like 11 made it to the majors this year. Trevor Williams should have been higher. Many were wrong on him.

What's funny is that I have been working on a doc to update this, just waiting to see if Max gets another 15 AB (doubtful) to see if he still qualifies.

Technically we've always considered someone a prospect if they still qualify as a rookie by AB(130) or G/IP (30/50). No consideration of service time. So Max (122 AB), Luplow (78), Gift (54), Bostick (27), Stallings (29), Ortiz (12), Borrmann (1), Angel Sanchez (8 g/12.1 IP), Leathersich (24/16.2), Dovydas (24/25.1) and Santana (19/18) are all still eligible. Bell, Osuna, Diaz, Williams, Glasnow, Brault and Barbato are no longer eligible.
