The funny thing is I know what I get out of Mercer relative to stats.  Take away 2015, he is essentially a 13 homer, mid to high 50s RBI guy.  Not great, but I know what I get.  He is more consistent than two of our starting outfielders.  Who knows what they end up with.

I'm sure we are seeing JM's final year in Pittsburgh.  He will be dealt at the trade deadline when we are out of it.

Polanco, I'll grant you, but you've gotta be kidding me comparing Marte to Mercer...   ::).

Marte is (or will be at the end of the season) a top NL CFer.   Mercer is a sub-par SS,  a marginal starter really.   his range gets worse every year as he ages, and it was sub-par to start with.  his bat sleeps every spring.   he hit the first week and now back to sleep he goes...

We may not have any better replacement, but that's because our GM sucks.

It’s starting to get really frustrating that this guy can’t figure things out and get out of his own head because he probably has more talent then just about any starting pitcher on this staff and he can’t help this team win because he is still a complete and total headcase.
What would you do with him? I think they are just trying to salvage anything from him at this point. This might be his last chance in Pittsburgh. He isn't seeing the rotation anytime soon, he can't be trusted in high leverage situations so????? It’s just frustrating that a guy with that much talent has been demoted to mop up role because he can’t be trusted by Hurdle. He still needs to throw more strikes and still gets hit way too hard at times. He is such a game changer for the Pirates if he could ever figure it out that’s why it’s incredibly frustrating to watch.

I agree with Notes and Freddy. Glasnow has no established role because they are still trying to figure out how he can be used that will enable him to improve without hurting the team in the process. Despite all that unfulfilled potential and the very high hopes for him, he's still not good enough to trust in pressure, potentially game-changing situations. But he excels in AAA and needs to be in MLB at this stage but still needs to show he can be consistently effective. He's almost like a Rule 5 guy who has to be with the team but shouldn't be used in important situations while he--hopefully--grows as a pitcher. I'm not convinced that he'll ever be more than what we see now. Even now as he's being treated with kid gloves, he's got a 6.23 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 6 walks in 8.2 innings. So far, the only things impressive about him are his height and the fact that he throws hard. Neither of which have made more than a bad pitcher. We keep hoping his next outing will be the one that turns him around and begins the ascent to excellence that we've been expecting for the past 3 years. But despite that he's usually not in a game for long, he's been scored on in 3 of 5 outings now. A SSS for sure, but not the signs of improvement we were hoping to see. The Pirates aren't holding him back. He's holding himself back. At some point this season if things don't change with him, they're going to need an organizational meeting to discuss what, if any, role he will have in the team's future. How many years should they keep a useless pitcher on the staff in hopes that he turns into a star? I hope it never comes to that. I hope he becomes the quality arm we want. But if things don't get btter, that decision will have to be made.

It really makes little difference how much talent a pitcher has if he cannot throw the ball somewhat close to where he wants it, and throws 1 pitch, 80% of the time.. he's got pretty much no shot at being a decent starter. I mean, come on guys lol.

Bullpen work can be a different story. Glasnow is where he belongs now. Hopefully he can have a ML career.

I don’t understand this logic. He’s not been good but his stuff plays well. He may or. Ay not figure it out, but I’ve got no problem leaving him in the pen to see if he can figure it out.

If we released him, he wouldn’t get past the Reds.
