8/1 Bucs versus Cubs...

I’ll say it again this lineup has to be better this weekend against the Cardinals. I don’t want to see guys like Rodriguez and Luplow in the lineup and even a guy like Osuna who is batting under .200. JHay needs to be in the lineup everyday and if he isn’t going to play everyday  start Adam Frazier at 2nd who hits lefties good pretty good actually. This playing Sean Rod essentially every other game has got to stop if your Hurdle. They asked Clint after the game about Rodriguez and they said they still want to give him an opportunity to figure things out. Well now is not the time for a guy who is hitting .160 and can’t hit and stinks to try and figure that out when you are 3-4 games out of a playoff spot. This team has potential to compete for a wildcard spot but it should t have to keep overcoming Hurdle managing like a bafoon to do so and that’s exactly what has been happening. It’s frustrsting and I’m fed up to here with it. Sean Rodriguez is 1 for 18 with 10 strikeouts since his Home run in Cincy on that Sunday game. He struck out 4 times last night. QUIT PLAYING RODRIGUEZ HE STINKS!!!

Hurdle seems to believe his #1 priority is to give his players every chance to figure things out on the field regardless of the cost to the team. It's as if he's managing 25 individual players with no goal in sight other than their stats and not managing a team with a common goal of winning. Bell slumped badly after the first week of the season. Hurdle gave him 57 more games at cleanup to figure things out during which Bell's line was .221/.296/.348/.644. The Pirates were 27-30 during that stretch before Bell was dropped lower in the order. That period coincided with Polanco batting 2nd for about 40 games with a line of .210/.309/.406/.715. Hurdle obviously felt it was more important to let those players figure things out in key batting order spots than to give his team the best chance of winning. Same goes now for S-Rod and his .164 BA. He's started 36 of 109 games. But he was on the DL from 6/27-7/19 during which time he missed 18 games. So he has started 39 of the 91 games for which he was available (43%) while each time a better player has sat out to make room in the lineup. Hurdle sees no problem with this and no reason not to do it. When interviewed after losses, he seems unfazed and just says they'll try it again tomorrow. Winning just doesn't seem to mean that much to him. As fans rooting for the team to win, it is frustrating and infuriating. But I don't think Hurdle is going to change.

One other thing I wasn’t a fan of starting Kingham last night. He almost looked defeated before he even threw one pitch last night. I just think I last night was just a huge loss. Instead of being 5 out if first begins the Cubs you’re now 7 games, and instead of being 3 out of the wildcard you are now 4 games out. And now guys in the rotation are being pushed back a day as well. Taillon isn’t going to pitch until Monday in Colorado when he should have been pitching in the Cards series. You can’t afford to be having Taillon pitch a week apart now as important as these games are now. Maybe I am making too. much of this but I just wish Hurdle would take these games more seriously and he just doesn’t. All you have to do is look at the lineup last night as evidence of that.

if the Bucs fall short of playoffs this year, Hurdle should go. The only way he should stay is if the front office is telling him to manage players this way.

There is no explanation for what is happening with S-Rod now. I get trying to get him going if its April, but hey, the letters after A in the month now indicate that it is August and not April. There are less than 60 games to go. Every game is important.

I agree with most of the previous posters.

1) Hurdle is not the manager to try and win a playoff spot. All too often he manages like winning is not the main goal.

2) When S-Rod came off the DL (ahem, cough, cough) and hit the HR I commented that he likely would now be the beneficiary of another 100 at bats. Clint, did you see his at- bats last night? He can't catch up to a fastball anymore and pitchers are feasting on him. Perhaps he will run into a mistake now and then, but he has not been an asset at the plate in a long time and is now a dead hole in an underpowered line-up. His fielding is also becoming more circumspect. The Bucs now have many players (alternatives) who can also play multiple positions. He is a sunk cost; time to move on.

3) Kingham has pitched some good games this year. Unfortunately, the good games become a distant memory when it takes a pitcher 50+ pitches to try and survive an inning. And while Kingham is not the only Pirate pitcher who has experienced the heeby - jeebies on making throws to a base, last night's throw to third against Baez was particularly pathetic. Even if the Bucs had not signed Archer, and even with Kuhl out for the rest of the season, the Bucs would have needed to find a starter to replace Kingham.

4) Injuries affect all teams. However, the swarm of injuries (Dickerson, Marte, Bell, Harrison Cervelli and even Kuhl) that almost simultaneously beset the Bucs appears to have taken the edge off a team that was really humming. While I believe Luplow will be a productive player in the long haul, he has not ably replaced Dickerson, and while Osuna's defense is much appreciated, his bat has really lagged after some good pinch-hitting appearances early on in 2017. If Bell isn't well soon, the Bucs need to give Freese more time at first and hope that Moran can hit a lefty or two.

5) Stephen Brault is a very mediocre major league pitcher; way too many walks. His numbers suggest that his best role is as a left hand specialist, but Bucs continue to use him as a long reliever with really lousy results. Hard to mount a comeback when the relievers continue to give up runs. If the Bucs really want to compete, they need even more help in the pen.

Big series coming up against the Cardinals. We will find out if this team has a chance this year, or if the season will quickly slip away in early August. August has not been

Yea I don’t want to see Rodriguez start one more game this season. I don’t care who is hurt, or needs a rest or whatever the reason is. Hurdle just doesn’t see it that way though and continues to not give the Pirates the best chance to win games by playing him. It’s inexcusable for Hurdle to say they are playing him to get him going. He stinks and isn’t going to get any better don’t know why this is such an impossible situation for Hurdle to figure out.

Brault is now averaging 6 walks per 9 innings (46 walks in 69.1 innings).
