List Blue Jays VP Ben Cherington, Brewers Ass't GM Matt Arnold, and a mystery candidate speculated to be Bucs acting GM Kevin Graves.

Gonna be an interesting few days!

Praying its Arnold.  Don't want Graves.  If you are turning over things, no sense elevating someone who served under NH.f

Maybe he's good?  I mean I have no idea but don't think that should be disqualifying.  That's just as wrongheaded on insisting on someone from Pittsburgh roots or whatever.

You just canned the GM of the Pirates for a specific reason.  The AGM has trained below the guy you just canned and learned possibly some bad habits.  If you are unloading everyone, you need a fresh break, not someone that has been here.

On the other hand, with the statement from Nutting to change things in the FO, Graves might just be the right guy. He worked with NH for so long and hopefully learned from NH mistakes and will go into the gig doing things his way and not NH way.

Graves can't be all bad as the Giants interviewed him in their search for a new GM. So he's done something to catch the attention of other teams looking for leadership.

Tampa Bay Rays GM Erik Neander voted MLB Executive of the Year

He should send Neil Huntington a thank you card.

Neander's moves included acquiring outfielder Austin Meadows and pitcher Tyler Glasnow at the 2018 trade deadline from Pittsburgh for pitcher Chris Archer

He will get a thank you card and a job.

He's already told the Yankees and Red Sox that they can't go wrong hiring NH as an advisor.

This is a problem where GM's who are on the rocks can make a favorable trade and get a job later, owners and club presidents need to get involved in these obviously one sided trades. I know it is hard to know how a trade will turn out but I think about the absurd deal DL made for Matt Morris. That was one of the worst trades I ever saw with the Pirates paying him 10 million while he sat home and drew a check. Littlefield traded players Jason Schmidt, Jason Kendall, Sean Casey, Aramis Ramírez, Chris Young, Gary Matthews, Jr., and Kenny Lofton for little or nothing in return. DL career in baseball should have been over but no he got a job with the Cubs who he gave Aramis Ramirez in a horrible trade. Owners need to understand the business they own.

Cherington and Arnold coming to Pittsburgh in coming days for another round of interviews. Appears the Pirates may soon have a GM. I wouldn’t mind if they hired them both, one as VP, and the other as GM.

In agreement, if they can hire both. The question I have relative to Cherrington is can he handle a frugal owner? Remember, he was GM in Boston with an open checkbook and then has been in Toronto, a place that hasn't gone full Yankee, but brought in Tulo and Donaldson and took on payroll. Arnold might be a better fit due to this, but I'm not sure we can go wrong. Cherrington did wonders with the Boston farm system.

That third candidate may be Pete Petila of the Astros. P2 is reporting he was interviewed for the spot.

He would be intriguing. He has worked with a very good GM who has rebuilt the Astros from three-consecutive 100-loss seasons and turned them into WS title contenders or winners every year. He is part of the formula that made Cole and Morton more viable pitchers when they got to Houston. They have a hell of a farm system oo boot. The ONLY concern again is Houston is throwing money around and he is in an organization with a checkbook that has few limits.

mlbtr, quoting Mackey of the Post-Gazette, says Cherington is choice one, if he accepts -- https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/ ... es-gm.html
