Didn't use the slider last night as his FB command was a little off. Wipeout pitch if he gets ahead in the count. Sky is the limit if he stays sound.

Didn't catch any of the game until the 8th.   That said, based on the first 5 games  of this very short season, it appears that one of our main discussion points is what Shelton did or did not do.

Hopefully this will never reach the level of Lloyd McClendon territory, but based on initial indications, Lloyd could have a challenger.

Someone mentioned in another thread that maybe Shelton has been instructed by BC to play as many guys as he can so that they can all be better evaluated. That could be the case if BC has decided that this is a throw-away year due to the shortened schedule.

I'd tell Cherington to leave me alone.  I want to win baseball games.  Cherington can sit on his ass and watch practice if he wants.

Clearly, the Pirates do not have as much talent as most teams in baseball. But ---

If I were Cherington, I would realize that this may be the Pirates best opportunity to sneak into the play-offs.

1) A 60 game schedule.

2) More teams in the play-offs.

3) Expanded rosters that may help a manager better work through factors such as an under inspiring pen.

4) The Bucs miss playing some of the better teams in baseball.

5) Limited travel.

6) Who knows what factor COVID will play in the season.

If a team suddenly has a 5 game win streak, they could rise to the ranks of being a favorite in a division.

2020 could be a year in which a team played just well enough to make the play-offs and had enough healthy and effective starting pitchers to be a factor.

That said, in Bucco land, 2020 appears to be a snooze year. Expect little and get even less. To date, the new management team does not strike me as folks who will soon be competing for the title of best management team in baseball.

Oh well, back to work.

Even though he did not have great command with the FB he managed to use what was working and get the side out in order for 1st save. The Sky is not the limit for Burdi, but Mars (not the town N. of the Burgh) but the actual red planet, sure as heck is!

I agree with you, though I have no thoughts of post-season play.

That said, I've never once gone into work and not at least tried to do the best I could.

This idea of allowing a manager to do anything other than doing his best to field the best roster he can on any given day is contrary to anything I believe in, and I'd refuse to do it. i'd resign or allow myself to be let go. It's happened.

If Cherrington's expected to tell Shelton who's playing and when, then we don't need Shelton. Give Cherrington a uniform to put on.

Cherrington has more than sufficient time to gain whatever information he needs to do his job. He doesn't need to think of himself as a Little League coach who has to let every kid take his turn.

He should allow Shelton to decide on who should play based on all available criteria. Some guys need rest or whatever. But, he should field the best nine he has at any given time given those conditions. Playing time should be earned, even on the worst of teams. It's how teams get better. Everyone pushes each other.

Cherrington has tape. He watches practices. He knows who has what. And if he doesn't, then he's not the right person for his job.

I wish I had written this. I don't want a five year plan.

If Shelton would post a line up consisting of Tucker, Moran, Osuna, Reynolds, Newman, Stallings, Kramer and Martin, he would have a team of all LMG's. BOB would be in ecstasy and give out bonuses to Shelton and Cherintgton. Then all Cherington would have to do is get rid of Archer, Polanco, and Bell in exchange for more LMG's and BOB would be near an all LMG team.

the Pirates are not going to sneak into the playoffs this year. The team needs to focus on players that can get into the playoffs next year or be dealt for players that can do that.

There should be no thinking about what can happen in 2023.
