Earlier in the season Shelton was quoted as saying he didn't concern himself with pitch counts. That seems to be because he concerns himself with inning counts. 5 is his limit.

Third straight appearances where Holmes has been scored upon. Brubaker gave up only 2 runs in 5 innings and retired 7 of the last 8 batters he faced before being lifted after 71 pitches.

Shelton's lineup left no RH batters on the bench. I guess the possibility of needing a pinch hitter never occurred to him. And he probably doesn't know that the Nats' closer is a LHP. This managing job seems to be a little too complex for him. But at least he remembered to give his starting pitcher the mandatory rest after 5 innings.
