Yes, sadly the only way the Pirates are likely to retain him next year is if he's so bad in September that he doesn't get good offers from better teams. It almost defeats the purpose of signing him this year if he's not going to be with them next year. Or if the only way he can be with them next year is to be bad enough that no one else wants him.   :(

Seriously?  You guys think two good months in PGH is going to net him a contract out of the Pirates range?  If you’re right I’m very disappointed.  Frankly, I don’t know if Ben is even interested in him, but I never dreamed tge Pirates would not be able to afford him if they do have an interest.
I think his best chance for the majors in 2022 is with the Bucs, however he might want to go back to Japan.

This way he gets to experience what it is like playing for the Pirates so if they want him to come back he will at least consider the offer. I don't see how he can do well enough that a contender is going to say, hey, we want to pay you millions of dollars to be a bench player for us.

In other words, no matter what he does with the Bucs he isn't going to show he should be a regular player on a contender.

I lived in DC area from 1981 to 2012. Got HTS probably by 1982 or 1983. Larry Sheets was a pretty good platoon ballplayer. I think the O's hoped for more but he was decent.

But I honestly don't see anything Kranick throws that would make me think he'll have any sort of success as a starter in MLB. Does anyone else? Honestly, from what I've seen, I'm not even sure how he had any sort of success in the minors. He's not overpowering, I don't see any kind of awesome breaking pitch or any kind of pitch with a lot of movement.
Totally agree. His low minors stats were marginal but he struggled in limited work at AA and AAA. In fact he's only been in 3 AA games and 10 AAA games. I believe the Pirates are only using him to eat some innings. I don't think they see him as a piece of a future rotation. Not unless he logs more time in AA or AAA and shows significant improvement.

We need a poll: Who is worse, Alford or Tucker?

two infield hits and a soft liner to the outfield gets the Bucs on the board. Tucker comes through

Newman channeled his inner Pedro Alvarez on that throw.

For a former player, it really surprises me how often Wehner says, "I'm surprised he took that pitch, that was really borderline." It's the way the game is, three true outcome. Guys just don't swing at pitches they don't like, not counting the ones they're fooled on. Striking out is no big deal these days.
