It was his second game as a Phillie since the trade. Only 1 pitcher has ever pitched a no-hitter in his first game after being traded. That was former Buc Don Cardwell. The Phillies were shopping Cardwell early in the 1960 season. Joe Brown wanted him but could not work out a trade, so the Pirates made a deal with St.L. in late May for Vinegar Bend Mizell. The Phillies traded Cardwell to the Cubs on May 13, 1960. In his first game as a Cub on May 15, he no-hit the Cardinals. Cardwell got the first batter out in the first inning and then walked Alex Grammas (who would later be a coach for the Pirates). He then retired the next 26 in a row.

Incredible game to watch. Lorenzen didn't have his stuff early on, walking 3 batters through the first 4 innings. He wound up getting 15 fly ball outs in a ballpark that is known for being a hitter's park, especially during the warmer weather. Rookie CF'er Johan Rojas covers a lot of ground effortlessly and tracks down balls from gap to gap like Garry Maddox used to.

Nick Castellanos hit 2 home runs, the 2nd being his 200th career HR. They showed his son running in the aisles celebrating.

Then, there was Weston Walker, recently called up, making a great catch in the 1st or 2nd inning against the wall in foul ground in LF, and then hitting a long HR in his first at-bat in the majors, with his family in the stands, and his father with tears streaming down his face.

Finally, in the 9th, they continually showed Lorenzen's Mom and Wife during the 9th inning, and their reactions on each pitch. after the no-hitter was completed, Castellanos young son ran over to Mrs. Lorenzen and hugged her. the Philly crowd was amazing (over 35,000) and loud. The post game interviews on the field and in the clubhouse showed a really nice guy who has struggled in his 9 year career being very humble and grateful for all he has persevered through and now finally gets a chance to start in a regular rotation and getting to a team with a chance at the post-season.

Really great stuff.

Oh! Almost forgot, Rodolfo Castro played 2nd base in this game and made a really nice play in the 7th inning going into the hole between 1st & 2nd to take a hit away from a Nats hitter (Ruiz?). though Doc might like to hear that!

This is the very reason Bob Nutting will never spend money on a high-priced free agent, let alone a roster populated by stars. And truthfully, when we see situations like the Mets and Yankees this year, as well as other teams every year, it’s easy to see his point. That’s why I’m convinced the owners have to establish a payroll guideline that has all teams spending the same amount of money. The good news for fans is that it’ll spread out the talent, making rosters more competitive throughout the two leagues. But I have no illusions that it’s going to happen in my lifetime. The big franchise owners have too much power.
