Yes, the Pirates are a business to Nutting. And he makes decisions based on that approach. All that is true. But that's the Pirates. It's been that way for Nutting's ownership period and will be that way going forward. If we don't accept that (or can't live with it) we are fortunate to live in a time when we can get almost any teams games on-line. Check out the Mets, check out the Phils. We stick with the Pirates because of some flaw in ourselves. That's not Nutting's fault. He doesn't care if we bleed for the team or not. Surge's point (I think) is that we already know this about Nutting - we don't need someone posting it in every thread, as if they've just discovered something. Sometimes it's just nice to read/talk about baseball. Sure, we aren't getting any superstar but who are we getting? Is Reynolds going to play first base or should they try Davis there? Just baseball.

I'd love to just talk about baseball and not the business side of it. But when people post here that "the Pirates can't afford Cody Bellinger", or "the Pirates can't afford to have a payroll over $100 million", a response to that misinformation is warranted. And so, unfortunately, the matter of Nutting and his strategies need to be brought up. Decisions made in this organization begin and end with money, not with the thought of what they mean toward winning games. We can talk about baseball, and the players, and the play on the field, but all of that is secondary to the people in the non-baseball part of the organization, the ones who are really in charge.

We don't usually get the "talk baseball" lecture until closer to Spring Training. Meanwhile the ones saying that talked about anything they wanted.

Well, I see what I posted as different, because it's something that's actually taking place that I can look at on my phone right now. It's a one off thing. It's offseason. If the canned comments were only a one off thing per thread, I'd live with that.

But that's just me. But it's all good now, I'm off the ledge, Mrs. Wizard has put me back on the straight and narrow.

BTW, I was writing a post on the weekly thread on Reddit, but deleted it. They were commenting about the lack of interest. My response is, we kind of know already. The Pirates are not going to make any splash trades or signings. On MLB Network, they're never mentioned as being "in" on anything. When the winter meetings start, they'll have GMBC on, who will give us the usual GM speak. After the interview, Harold Reynolds and Matty V will have a short discussion, centering on how the Pirates could be that "dark horse team" if they could spend a little money. After that, we'll hear nothing until Pirate Fest. Then there will be nothing until spring training gets near.

It is nice that MLB Network has taken the route that everytime they bring up the Pirates, they criticize management for not spending. They're even taking the route now of, "You have Paul Skenes, and some good young arms....don't mess this up".

my guess is after the Rule 5 draft but with their roster I don't see why they are waiting. Maybe it will be as a Christmas present to Cutch and the fans.

Last year they signed Cutch closer to Christmas. Currently the roster is at 36 players,so they probably want to see if they add to the roster during the upcoming Winter Meetings, or will they select a player in the Rule 5 draft.

Read about a Ashcroft or Harrington trade for Tristan Casas today, a young 1st baseman with Red Sox. Seen as both clubs trading from strength to shore up a weakness. I would welcome such a trade. What say ye?

Has there been anything more about Reynolds first base possibility? To me, that would help decide whether they need a first baseman or an extra outfielder.
