Dick Schofield ( The Duck) passes away at 87.

Always liked his hustle. I remember when he filled in

for Dick Groat who I think broke his arm or wrist.

Schofield did a great job. Also was am important part

of the 1960 team

Sad to hear. When he filled in for Groat for those three weeks, the Pirates never missed a beat. It's said that it takes all 25 guys to win. That 1960 team, and Dick Schofield, were textbook examples.

That was his contribution to the 1960 team. Groat suffered a fractured left wrist on a HBP on Sept 6. Up to that point in the season Schofield had started only 4 games and appeared in the field in just 7 others. He was 7 for 35 (.200). Along with Oldis, Baker and Christopher, he was one of the forgotten men on the bench. But from Sept 6 thru the end of the season Schofield went on a tear going 27 for 67 (.403) including 8 multi-hit games. The Pirates had a 7 game lead when Groat went down and finished with the same 7 game lead. No one expected that Schofield would hit even better than Groat during the time he filled in for him. Groat started all the WS games but his wrist was not 100%. Schofield appeared in the 3 WS losses, going 1 for 3 pinch-hitting and replacing Groat in the late innings.

I agree with you. I just hope the current FO does their homework, and picks a solid player at #1 in next weeks draft. It seems the former FO had about a 50 % success record with their #1 picks. Guys like Sanchez, Tucker and even Newman were not the best choices.


Huntington and his staff had very little success in drafting and/or developing players.  I have far more faith in BC and his people, but it still remains to be seen.  It’ll take a couple of more years to know fully but already we’ve seen nice contributions from first year players. 



Changing GMs was the best move Nutting could make.  He had to have gotten advice from others because he certainly isn’t capable of making any kind of positive baseball decision himself.  He only knows how to make money without spending any.


Good observations, especially Nutting getting rid of Huntington as for sure he knows nothing about baseball.
