According to Forbes, the Piirates generated the 3rd HIGHEST profit in MLB in 2023 at $68M. 2024 numbers are not out yet but I’m sure the Pirates were in that same bracket. Even though they had a slight payroll increase they also had higher attendance. This doesn’t even take into consideration of the appreciation of the franchise. Bottom line is that the Pirates can certainly afford an average ML payroll of $150M

Nutting isn't competing for a championship. He's running a profitable business. So don't look for him to spend what he can afford. If the Pirates are generating one of the highest profits in MLB, that's the only "win" he's looking for. I don't say that to trash Nutting. It's just how things are. When he set the franchise attendance record in 2015 in a 98-win season and enjoyed the influx of revenue that came with it, they started to go on the cheap and break up the team in 2016 instead of building on it to sustain it or make it better. The goal was the revenue; not the wins.

Pirates didn't have one play on MLBN top 100 plays of the year, unless you count the combined no-hitter the Cubs had that made the list.

Back in mid November it was reported Brent Strom was being hired as an assistant pitching coach. Nothing yet has been confirmed by the Pirates. Has the deal fallen through, or are they just holding off to make a special announcement ? At times I don’t understand their logic as to why they delay or withhold making team announcements.
