Don't worry, all the money we saved from not acquiring any major league players will be added to the budget for next year's player acquisitions.

I believe those very words are part of the organization's mission statement, you know, those fancy fictional words all companies espouse but never follow.

Jake Arrieta will win five games this year, three of them against the Pirates where he'll look like Walter Johnson each time.

Speaking of Billy Hamilton and his other-worldly powers when playing the Pirates, I was thinking how fun it would be if we all put our heads together to name an all time Pirates-killing team, made up exclusively of, to be kind, below par talent.

That would take some thought. On a related note, remember Jeff Reboulet? Utility guy who finished career with Bucs in 2003. Modestly talented at best but a hard nosed guy Pirate fans appreciated. Reboulet was with the Orioles for a few years when Randy Johnson was with Seattle. Johnson was simply overpowering and whenever the Orioles played against Johnson, most of the starters got the day off. The Orioles expected to lose to Johnson anyway and didn't want to mess up their hitters. So those were the days Reboulet started. For some reason, the best pitcher in MLB could not get Reboulet out. Reboulet owned Johnson.

That's part of what makes baseball so much fun, those unexplained outcomes. One of my favorites is how Al Weiss, never known for his bat, had a great '69 World Series against that great Baltimore pitching. Stuff like that can't be explained, which is why I can't dive head-first into the analytics of today.
