Pirates, FWIW, have 25 blown saves this year......TWENTY FIVE
Blown saves is another odd stat. We tend to think of a BS as a 9th inning event. But middle relivers get charged with them whenever they give up the lead even though those pitchers were never going to be allowed to pitch the 9th and get a save. I don't think a BS should be charged at least until the 8th inning. But most relievers who get charged with a BS would never have been around in the 9th to get the save anyway even if they hadn't given up the lead.
26 (now) is a crap load no matter how you look at it. We've seen this act too much.

I'm guessing Shelton is trying to show confidence in crowe, but how can you? Why does he go completely against the grain with this guy? The numbers don't lie. I'm sure Shelton will give some BS excuse why he was in there and left him in there. He needed to get pulled after that double.

What a complete waste of a great offensive performance, clutch performances at that.

The most reliable reliever has been Banuelos, but I'm sure shelton will use "numbers" for him not being in there because he got beat up by the Yankees in his first outing as a Buc, he's a left hander, yadda yadda yadda

Worst loss of the year. this should be the impetus to fire Shelton.

I have not been a Shelton hater but I am now.

edit: getting close to becoming a Ben Cherington hater too although I give him the off season to improve next year's team.

The thing about Shelton is that he's such a clueless, horrendous, incompetent, illogical, idiotic manager that we are WAY past the point where firing him was a necessity for the good of the team. So when he keeps piling on with more and more incompetent, counterproductive managing, what's the difference? Why fire him after 213,428 stupid moves if they didn't fire him after 213,427? He has already done everything possible to get himself fired and all that's happened is that BC has announced he'll be back next year. So Shelton isn't going anywhere. And that's all the proof we need that this team has no interest in trying to improve.

Even though this is yet another lost season for the Pirates, there is really no excuse for losing this game. How is this team ever going to get the feel of winning when the Manager consistently pulls the rug out from under them. To develop a culture of winning you must win first.

I certainly don't remember all of the 26 blown saves, but three recent ones, the two coming against the Cardinals a couple of weekends ago and then last night's, really show how much Bednar's been missed these past few weeks.

I can't wait for Bobster's end of season review of Shelton. He won't hold anything back then. You would think the team at least should make it appear they are trying to win.

I was able to confirm 24 blown saves. Crowe was not charged last night because he entered with a 4-run lead so there was no save to be had. The only BS charged was to Underwood who gave up the lead in the 6th inning.

Only 2 of the 24 BSs occurred in the 9th inning, 1 each to Bednar and Stratton. Another occurred in the 11th inning (Crowe). Crowe has been charged with 6 BSs but only the one in the 11th was at the end of the game. Most BSs are early in games whenever a reliever gives up the lead, like Underwood last night in the 6th inning.

A horrible loss.

Shelton is fortunate that the Pirates are not in a pennant race because his inept managerial performance through-out last night's game is what would not go unnoticed and would get you fired in other organizations.

I know that the Pirates have missed Bednar, however his performance really started to decline even before the All-Star game. It also didn't help that DeJong went down for a while. Regardless, there is no excuse for leaving Crowe in last night's game, and in my opinion, for bringing him into the game in the ninth in the first place.

The Buc's were on the verge of beating the Yankees in NY after getting swept by the Mets. Perhaps a day when Pirate players could feel a moment of pride and joy as they trudge toward a 100+ loss season. Nope, the Shelton effect proved too hard to overcome.

Derek Shelton likely is a good person, and I don't wish him any ill will. But, if (hey, you must have hope) he is in the dug-out at the start of tonight's game, BC wrongly will have fostered the continuation of the current malaise.
