Currently, the Pirates have VanMeter, a utility infielder with a career .211 BA who never hit better than .237 at 1B.

So they acquired Chang from Cleveland to play 1B. He is a utility infielder with a career .208 BA who never hit better than .228.

They have Mason Martin at Indy but it appears they coveted a clone of VanMeter. Go figure.

Shelton/Cherington seem to love, love, LOVE them some VanMeter. He plays nearly every day and bats 1st, 4th or 5th. So naturally, they looked at the roster and concluded: WE NEED MORE VANMETERS!!! Luckily for them, Cleveland didn't appreciate their VanMeter and DFA'd him. Imagine! I believe Cherington saw that and said, Wow, that's a head scratcher. We better grab him before someone else does." As the saying goes, "One man's Chang is another man's VanMeter." You can never have enough VanMeters.
