Wow.  This has the smell of Boras.  The Mets are willing to sale out the rest of their draft for this guy.
Mets have just over 3 million to sign the rest of their draft.

The Mets also have the payroll and big market notoriety to have a very good chance of getting Rocker to stay and have a long career with them. But now they'll have to go through a few years of growing pains with him as he matures as a pitcher instead of having the Pirates draft him and take care of that before they signed him as a free agent.

I agree with what you're saying here.  Rocker is better off with the Mets than attempting to save the Pirates from themselves.

My concern is that if the Pirates intentionally passed on any kid mainly because of finances, that it would tell me that very little is changing.

I get the impression that BOB and Boras have little regard for each other.

That said, since I don't know whether finances played a part in the selection , I have an open mind.  We have a good kid of our own, and let's see how he grows.

I just read that since the advent of slotting in 2012 only one player got 1-1 total slot money. IDK how far under the others signed though.

Which means they will have to go below slot.

Rocker played his way to #10. To pay him more than that by some 20%....no thanks.

Out here in the far reaches trying to figure some of this draft out. Clearly BC is gambling on things by taking two kids with football commits to really big programs. You have to assume the Pirates know what it will take to get them though. But if we sign White and Chandler and get 4 of Baseball America's top 32 players in a single draft, that would be stunning/awesome/jaw-dropping/fantastic.

There were a couple of quotes that I have read that stuck out:

"Days before the draft, Cherington said that it requires a special player to carry the weight of wearing the 1:1 tag — the first overall pick of the first round — throughout his career knowing that all eyes will be on his every move."

I found that to be really interesting and a nod to some of the Davis has humility and a great character quotes on the board.

"The left-hander from Bishop Eustace Prep in Pennsauken, N.J., has an unorthodox three-quarters delivery, which he claimed was based on Clayton Kershaw mixed with Madison Bumgarner and blessed by God."

After I finished laughing it was pretty clear that I was going to be a big Solometo fan.

"We're optimistic that we can make a lot, if not all, of these guys Pirates." - Pirates AGM Steve Sanders

"The Pirates ended up taking several seniors to help try to accommodate the big upside high schoolers they took in rounds two through four, including Dallas Baptist second baseman Jackson Glenn (fifth round), who I thought was one of the best seniors available. He hit 20 bombs in 2021. Pittsburgh ended up with four of our top 54 prospects — Henry Davis (first), Anthony Solometo (second), Lonnie White (comp B), and Bubba Chandler (third), who was announced as a pitcher. This was our third-ranked farm system but they may have pushed themselves past Toronto with this draft. Davis was our second-ranked prospect. He has big power, feel for contact, and a plus-plus arm. Solometo has a long, low arm action, very advanced east/west command, and his slider projects to plus at peak. He needs to find a better changeup but his chances seem pretty good, despite his long arm action, because he has such good feel to pitch already, and his changeup’s movement will mimic his fastball’s since he’s a lower slot guy.

Fourth-round high school pitcher Owen Kellington was a participant in the Draft League and combine. He has a delivery similar to Ubaldo Jiménez’s, where his front side flies way open and he tilts out, which helps Kellington get to a vertical arm slot. That creates backspin and carry on his fastball and big depth on his curve. He sits in the high-80s but has promising underlying traits." - FG

Going by past drafts , it's pretty much a slam dunk we will sign all the players in the first 10 rounds. I heard the % from past drafts and it was well into the mid to upper 90's. They pretty much find the asking price and draft "accordingly." So the Pirates know what the 5% allowance is , add to it the deal they made with Davis and add to that what they save with the 3 college seniors drafted yesterday and they come up with the needed extra money.. I think it will take something close to a renege for it to go wrong.

That said , I can't believe how well this appears to have gone for us. I was bummed that there was not much difference between 1 and 6 but in retrospect , the Pirates tuned it into a bonanza . It's similar to a NFL team trading pick 1.1 for 4 first round picks and they would all be in the current draft to boot.

This was a really great draft. Looking forward to this turning out much better than the 2009 draft fiasco.

I see a number of shortstops have been taken. The Pirates seem to have concentrated on guys who play that position knowing they've already developed some baseball savvy and instincts. That's a good plan from my perspective as it'll be easy to move them to different positions knowing they already know how to play the most important one.
