"Winning" means different things to different people.

A Winning record vs. Winning the WS.  Big difference, as we remember from the year when we won 98 RS games.

We haven't won a division since...

Getting into the playoffs will be nice.  It's a little easier, looking at only the numbers.  Whether that holds true considering all other factors, I can't say.

Teams in the lower half of payrolls haven't done well in the WS.  I think the Marlins was the most recent team to have done it.  I could be wrong.  It's a very short list in the past 35 years.

Do you anticipate the Pirates being in the top half of payrolls any year soon?  I don't.

I don't know Reynolds. What I do know is that- if his goal is to wear the ring- he would be much better to look elsewhere rather than to remain with the Pirates. I would say that is also probably true if his goal is to earn decent MLB money. That would make two reasons to look elsewhere.

If he's satisfied with just winning RS records, stability, and some playoff appearances, then he might prefer to stay with the Pirates.

There is a photo in today’s Trib showing Reynolds and Nutting smiling. Nutting should be ashamed of himself standing next to his best player, and now taking him to arbitration for over 650k, when the team payroll is less than 40 million dollars this year. As a Pirate fan I am very disappointed with them not settling with Bryan Reynolds over an amount which is less than a rookie would make this season.

When it comes to saving money, Nutting has no shame. Reynolds is just a laborer to him, one who’s easily replaced with another, cheaper laborer. To him, that’s how a profitable business operates.

I wonder if that photo shows where BOB's hands are. Probably had one in Bryan's back pocket, the no good so and so.

Excellent point!

I agree that is an excellent point. It is so ridiculous that Nutting and Company are taking their best player to arbitration. MLB should put the hammer down, and say no Revenue Sharing, or else put the franchise up for sale. I apologize for the negativity, but I am so disgusted with Nutting.

Remember when they released Juan Nicasio and his 2.85 ERA at the end of August 2017 to save 1 month's worth of salary? They saved about enough to pay a rookie the minimum salary the next year. Now Nutting's trying to save just a little over the current minimum by low balling his best payer in Reynolds. Their philosophy is that no amount is too small to save and well worth giving away one of their top pitchers or putting their top player thru the unpleasant arbitration process. Nutting would like to win baseball games but only if that could be done with maximum financial savings. He runs the Pirates as a bottom line business and ignores the competitive aspect of MLB. He hopes his GM can find a way to be as successful as other teams on the field with no financial help from the owner. But continuous failure on the field is a small price to pay for financial success.

Equally concerning- maybe even more concerning- is that Reynolds has claimed that he hasn't been approached with a longer extension.

I understand that one comes with risks; risks to both sides. Somehow it was spread that Reynolds rejected such a deal.

That the team hasn't made an offer, from Reynolds.....and, that someone says that the team did make an offer that Reynolds turned down says something. Just not sure what it says.

I've read numerous reports that Reynolds has rejected an extension offer. If you google it, a bunch pop up. He now says he is open to an extension but I suspect he's talking about buying out arbitration years rather than buying out FA years. And I don't believe he's denying any previous rejections but rather saying he would be open to a deal if it was the right price (which it apparently was not previously).

OK.

If there was an offer from the team, then my concern is lessened.
