It's always difficult to imagine why anyone chooses to work for Nutting. I generally believe he sells his front office hires on the false notion that he has received a bad rap and that he just needs the right people in place who can win without the spending of the big market teams. When Huntington was hired, he assured fans that the team would spend when the time was right. And when then time was right (2nd best record in MLB and franchise record attendance) they blew it up and went to minimal spending. And when Cherington was hired, he assured the fans the Pirates would spend when the time is right. But Pirates fans know better and laughed at that remark. Obviously, the time is not now right to spend an extra $650,000 to reward their best player. Nutting probably points out the small market teams that have had success and sells his FO hires on the idea that he just didn't have the right people in place to turn them into winners.

If any of that is true (as opposed to me being delusional--which also is not a bad guess) then something like pinching pennies on their best player must be prompting Williams and Cherington to believe they have made a huge mistake.

As for the rest, I stopped reading any articles as soon as they were quoted....probably over ten years ago.   Why?  Because they piss me off every time.

I dont care what they or he say.  I care what they do.

Which also means that I care what they don't do.
They could not agree to a figure so under the CBA they head to an arbitration hearing. I am sure you are aware of the  arbitration process under the CBA since you post on this site quite regularly. The player and the Pirates decided to use a third party to settle Reynolds 2022 salary.  Bottom line in my opinion, a team does not go to arbitration with their best player over this amount.

I agree with your final sentence.  It's the Pirates.  It's what they do.   Doesn't surprise me in the least.

Remember, this franchise is owned by the man who hired a lawyer (Coonelly) who represented MLB and assisted clubs in arbitration hearings to be the club's president.  Nutting is anti-labor, cut and dry.
Agree with you. I was always holding out hope that things would change under the current FO group.  I guess they remain the same.

This is a repeat of another thread, but it applies.

When you think ***this*** regime will change, just remember the addage, "leopards do not change their spots overnight."

They may change (they fade)....but, it takes  a very long time.

Look at the way BOB took care of Seven Springs.  He didn't.

He isn't changing.  It's his nature, his upbringing; ingrained.  It's who he is.

This regime is really the same regime.  Different names on the doors.

Williams' job is to make BOB's life easier.

It should be about time for the annual preseason interview with a FO person who assures us that Bob Nutting is committed to winning in Pittsburgh. That's always good for a chuckle.

I was especially surprised when Travis Williams took the job.  Maybe it was because he wanted to come back to live in Pittsburgh.  My first thought was, "how long will it take him to realize Nutting won't change" and he heads out the door.

As for Cherington, I can see him staying for as long as it takes for the players he's acquired to prove whether or not they can win, so maybe the next three to five years.  If they do win, they'll become too expensive to keep and Nutting will instruct that they be dealt away.  If they don't win, I can't see BC hanging around to start over with an owner who continues to run the organization the way Nutting does.

Joe Starkey has a good column in the Post-Gazette this morning about Nutting, and the Reynolds and Cruz situations.

Good point. Pretty sure it is scheduled for April 1.

The Post-Gazette can save some money by just reprinting any one of the last seven they published.

The Nutting regime has been nothing but a bunch of BS and lip service. Yet during that time the Pirate franchise has increased in value from $192M to $1.2B dollars. That is a billion dollars of equity Nutting is sitting on.

At least when McClatchy owned the team he made good on his promises. He promised to get PNC built. He promised to keep Pirate stars after PNC was built which he did by handing out market value long term contracts to Jason Kendall and Brian Giles.

Unfortunately McClatchy did not have the deep pockets to adequately fund the ball club and had to give up majority interest to the devil, I mean Nutting

Of course Nutting would not consider allowing Mark Cuban to buy in and become the majority stake holder. So here we are with a perpetual AAAA franchise in Pittsburgh

The thing is, if the difference would have been a couple of million, then it's just business. But a mere $650K difference shows that Bob Nutting just doesn't understand what should be done to further a healthy business relationship.

It's pathetic.

Some how, some way, the 28th-highest media market, the San Diego Padres, are able to afford Joe Musgrove and, potentially, Bryan Reynolds.  The 25th highest media market, the apparently impoverished Pittsburgh Pirates cannot.
