The only way BOB will do that is if he is diagnosed with a great big tumor in his wallet and he has to have the tumor removed to survive. :D :D

Is $9 mpy the most a Pirates been paid? I don't think so. It's the largest total contract.

A good signing in today's game. I admit that I'm surprised that he bit so low, given that he's the son of a former MLB player.

We have to start somewhere, so this is that start.

It is the largest $ figure given to a Pirate

Depends on how long he stays to get it. A lot can happen in 8 years. It's the largest overall contract, but not the highest ACV.

They've done it before, jus not as often as most would like. IIRC most people were excited about Polanco, then Marte and Cutch.

They had Tabata signed through 2016, with options through 2019. I think the only position players they took year-to-year were Mercer and Walker.

This contract appears to be a good one for the Pirates. If he stays here all eight years, it'll carry him through what should be his best years. He'll be 33 then and, like most players that age, on a downward slide. If he mostly performs like he did in the final month of the 2020 season, he'll be a steal at that price.

Having said that, it seems that Hayes' best option was to take the money. The Pirates would've otherwise controlled him until he was at or near 30. If he entered the free agent market at that age, he likely wouldn't have been able to cash in with a mega contract like he would've been able to do if he were, say, 27 or 28. I'm not feeling badly for him, though. He just earned himself $70 million to play baseball.

Interesting that they give that contract to Hayes at the same time they're taking Reynolds to arbitration over $650,000.

I thought the same thing. Are they talking with Reynolds about a long term deal? If not, I'd be fairly upset if I were Reynolds. He's proven over a few seasons that he's a real good major leaguer while Hayes has had one good month.

I read where the Pirates would like to avoid arbitration and are working on a 2yr. deal
