I've spent the season reading everyone's comments, and the well stated concerns, about starting pitching going forward.

Consensus seems to believe that Keller and Contreras are keepers moving forward with some lukewarm support for Brubaker and Wilson. It doesn't sound like there are many arms in the minors ready for prime time.

That being stated, here are the upcoming free agents available this year.

How many of these guys are viable candidates to become a Pirate?

Truthfully, unless someone like Lorenzen or Zach Davies is at the right price, there is not much there. Matt Harvey? Would you want him after the Tyler Skaggs incident? Anyone for Chris Archer part 2? I don't think so.

Anyway, open for discussion.

Cherington's rebuild is looking shaky as hell, from what I can see.

Priester, Burrows, Peguero, N. Gonzales, Matt Fraizier, Gorski, Swaggerty etc. etc.--there's really no guarantee any of them will stick in the major leagues, let alone excel there.

Endy looks like as close to a sure thing as we've got, but he can't save the team by himself. I assume H. Davis and Termarr Johnson will be good (in some far-off future) but even that's no guarantee.

If we're ever going to be good again it can't just be youngsters getting called up. They'll have to supplement with free-agent vets. Cherington has said the money for free agents will be there "when the time is right" but he's patient to a fault and he may have 2031 in mind.

assuming Cruz is the SS of the future and Castro will have a place on this team, does that not allow for some of the 20 middle infielders that are essentially blocked to be used as trade bait?  Why not trade them while they still have an unknown future value rather than they languish in the minors until they are of no value?
