I would as well. It's not saying much. I'll give Shelton a pass. He's on remote control.

Worst Bucco Manager in my opinion has to be John Russell
We call him the walking zombie as he appeared comatose.
Had no clue what so ever.
I totally agree with your assessment of Russell. But IMHO, McClendon was so astronomically bad that a statue would have been an improvement. Russell was that statue. I rate Russell a complete 0 and McClendon a -5.

Regardless of occupation or results, I don't score people very high when they leave me with the impression that they don't care about their job.
In the event of a tie among Incompetents, I will give the edge to the person who shows signs that, yes, they were incompetent, but at least they cared about their job and the effect that they have on others.
Russell left me with the impression that he would have rather have been anywhere on earth other than the Pittsburgh Pirates dugout. He came across that way every time, on the field and anywhere else. OF course, this was sold to us as everything is- that the guy, did in fact, care, and that he was "a steady hand guiding the ship."
McClendon at least cared about his job. That's obvious. He might have been a failure at many aspects of his job, but caring about it wasn't on the list.
Regardless, this is all ancient Chinese history at this stage of the game. I can't think of any good that comes of it today. We have new guys who at least care about their jobs and the effect they have on others, but are failing at it.

It’s a real toss-up between McLendon, Russell, and Shelton. It was like these guys had never seen a baseball game before they took over the team.
Honestly, I'd take any of them before Tracy.
I can see why. He appeared to me to know the game when he was with the Dodgers, but he failed to give any effort or even be concerned while he was here. That was despicable.

That's how I see it too, Doc. Tracy and Russell were similar in that neither seemed to have a pulse as a Pirate manager. I can't imagine what Huntington saw in Russell to hire him other than Russell was supposed to be very knowledgeable, but obviously lacked any managing skills. But Tracy had a good track record with the Dodgers and seemed like a good hire at the time. But with the Pirates, Tracy seemed to lack any interest as if he was slumming with a poor organization and just didn't care. Russell at full capacity was still a complete zero. But Tracy was capable of doing a better job and chose not to.

I was wrong about Russell. I saw the Bucs play the Nats at RFK his first year. I was impressed that he was out on the field during batting practice watching players closely. I figured he was out there trying to think of ways to get the most out of every player but he turned out to be a dud.

Well this didn't go where I thought it would - but nice to see a little activity here.
Can't I get one smiley for that awesome video of the full-sized 12-year old man, Lloyd, whose greatest baseball accomplishment (easily) was hitting 5 HRs in 5 ABs in the Little League WS. It's even the great Mickey Mantle interviewing him.
Come guys - give me one laughy face!

I went back and looked at it again. He was a man among boys. I wonder if any opponents asked the authorities to investigate his birth certificate?
To his credit, he made it to the big leagues, so there’s that. I just wish he had never expressed a desire to manage.

I'm guessing that everything he knew about managing he learned from his Little League coach.

That seems about right.
