Gonzo is going to make 12.275 million this season. It is going to be interesting to see who the Pirates send back and when.

Only pitched 50 innings last season, none after May 28 when the Mariners beat the Bucs, he pitched well but got a no decision.
The Mariners picked up some of Gonzales salary when they traded him to Atlanta. Supposedly Atlanta is picking up some of the salary with this trade. Not certain what the Bucs salary obligation will be. I also read the Pirates will send a player to be named or cash back to Atlanta. In my opinion the acquisition is a good risk for the Pirates.
yeah, I wonder about how much salary the Bucs will actually pay. We may get a good estimate from what the Bucs give up. I am more concerned about his injury than the money. Hopefully he can pitch as many innings as Rich Hill did and be better than Hill too. At this stage the Bucs are really going to be looking for pitchers that can eat up some innings during the first half of the season.

Pittsburgh doesn't take a Rule 5 player in the major league portion.

"The Pirates selected RHP Fineas Del Bonta-Smith, 26, from the Colorado Rockies in minor league phase of Rule 5 Draft. The 6-foot, 190-pounder was 2-2, 5.40 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 55 K, 21 BB, 12 HR in 45 IP over 35 G for Double-A Hartford in 2023." - Gorman

"The Pirates selected 1B Seth Beer, 27, from Arizona. The 6-foot, 225-pounder batted .273/.365/.451 with 22 2B, 15 HR, 66 RBI across Double-A and Triple-A in 2023. Beer was Houston's 1st-rd pick (No. 28) in 2018 out of Clemson. Hit .200/.266/.314 with 2 HR, 12 RBI in 19 G at AAA." - Gorman

"The Pirates also selected 3B/SS Marcos Cabrera, 22, from Yankees' High-A and CF P.J. Hilson, 23, from Giants' Low-A." - Gorman

"The Pirates lost SS Dariel Lopez (Giants), LHP Omar Cruz (Padres), C Rafael Escalante (Twins) and RHP Roelmy Garcia (Rays) in Rule 5 Draft.
Lopez was Pirates' No. 14 prospect by MLB Pipeline but missed 2023 season with a dislocated knee. Cruz was acquired in Joe Musgrove trade."

Pirates take 4 players in the minor league Rule 5 draft. Seth Beer was drafted first round by Houston in 2018, is one guy that sticks out for me. Pirates lost 4 players in the minor league portion, all in the second round of that draft, including their number 14 prospect, Dariel Lopez, who I have honestly never heard mentioned once in any sort of baseball discussion on the boards.

Damn
DBacks just signed Eduardo Rodriguez for 4 years $80M
I was hoping Pirates would go after him.
Will this team ever spend and invest in the product!

I just watched some video of Beer on the MLB site. It showed him hitting three HRs in a minor league game this past season. As he trotted around the bases each time, it looked like he was hobbled. His gait was odd, as if he had stones in his shoes. His body shape indicates he's not a base stealer, or has decent speed, so it's probably no big deal. I just hope he's not hampered by leg or foot issues that are going to prevent him from playing a full schedule.

The PG reports the Pirates will pay 3 million of Gonzalez' salary.

All of the talk / hopes / dreams of the Pirates going to Winter Meetings and actually signing or trading for REAL, LIVE, LEGITIMATE MLB STARTING PITCHING, which this team so desperately needs, was just comical.

While teams like the Reds are actually spending money and at least TRYING to win, that's not the Pirates way ... no matter how much BC promises they're going to "spend on starting pitching."

For the Pirates, "spending" means dumpster diving ... we only bring in cheap pitchers who are either (1) Bad; (2) Very old; or (3) Injured.

The 2024 rotation is going to be absolutely brutal.

And I swear if they screw up Skenes or play games with him they should just blow up the franchise.

While the Pirates are only paying the 3 million of the salary, they are using the full 12.75 million for budgeting purposes to say they are increasing payroll. SMDH
