The Pirates did a three-team trade in 1982: Dick Davis (Phils) for Nordhagen (Blue Jays), and then Nordhagen to the Pirates for Bill Robinson.  Nordhagen proved to have a back injury, so after one game (2-4, with two RBIs), Nordhagen was shipped back to the Blue Jays for...Dick Davis!  It was a long way to go for three guys who had a combined 293 plate appearances left in the majors.

I happened to be at game when Nordhagen played. Was definitely surprised when he was dealt right away.Think it was the only time I saw Steve Carlton pitch. Looked up boxscore today: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes ... 6190.shtml

This guy only got to smell the coffee:

Hall of Famer Jim Kaat played 25 seasons in the Bigs, and was going for 26 with the Pirates in 1984.  I believe he was one of those 'non-roster invitee' guys.  Bucs didn't offer him a contract, Kaat retired.

I'm guessing Kaat was the first to wear #39 after Dave Parker left.

Mike Diaz

Had a lot of pop and might have been an early steroid before they reall exploded

I had a giveaway poster of him wearing a bunch of baseballs like hand grenades and holding a bat like it was a machine gun, in honor of his nickname "Rambo."

I thought it was awesome. Kids have no taste.
