Furthermore, SF needs only go 20-15 to win 89 games and St.L needs go only 22-14 to win 89 games. So even if they could match 2014's record, it might not be good enough.


Exactly. That 9-22 collapse by the Brewers in 2014 certainly helped the situation. Doesn't look like the Cubs have that kind of meltdown in them, and the Cardinals have their devil magic working again so it looks like the Pirates are going to need the Giants to go belly up -- a tall order in an even year.

He was on my fantasy team until mid-July. If I wouldn't have cut him he might have hit one homer in that time frame.

That is an enormous swing.



Let’s give him a (very big) benefit of the doubt and say that the Pirates will win 2 more of his starts, which seems hard to believe at this point. But, anyway, that would make 10 for the year.



That’s a huge 13-game drop-off. And to me that provides the single biggest explanation for why this team is currently out of playoff position.



If the Pirates had gone just 13-7 in his starts this year (instead of 8-12), they would lead the wild card standings.




That certainly is a factor but I do not think there is a bigger factor than Andrew McCutchen with an OPS + of 97 at the end of August. Cutch plays every day. He has been the biggest difference maker this year and I don't really think it is that close. I would rank Liriano 2nd and Cole 3rd...
