Nicasio traded to Cardinals

Post by ArnoldRothstein »

Is there something indicating the first waivers were in early August?  The Pirates were right behind the Cards then, I think tied one day.  It seems if the Cards claimed Nicasio then, it wouldn't be so much to block him from someone above as it would be to take a player from the Pirates and use him to compete against them.

I don't think the Cards claiming in early August is a reasonable scenario.  It would have to be an awesome prospect haul for NH to think of trading a guy to a contender inside the division when the Pirates were closing within 3 games of first place.

Yeah, there's a lot indicating it was early August.   The cards had a worse record than the Brewers and the Brewers were desperately trying to fix their pen.

The cards pulled ahead of them by the 2nd week of August and wouldn't have been able to block.  Wouldn't have been then.

Also, pretty much everyone goes on revocable waivers then as a general practice.

It was the cards, in the billiards room, with the candlestick,  very early August. NH surely wanted to dump his salary but couldn't to the cards early August.

Again, NH said:

[edit]We recently requested trade waivers on Juan and he was claimed by a playoff caliber club that indicated to us their primary motivation was to block us from being able to trade Juan elsewhere and that they were not willing to give us more than very marginal value in return if we chose to trade Juan to them.[/edit]

Your scenario means the Pirates would have been willing to send a major leaguer to a team they were one game behind or even with, and the only reason it fell through was the other team wouldn't give up anything of value. That's highly implausible, and in baseball terms it would be treasonous.

assuming NH is right in saying marginal value.

Which begs the question ... what exactly was the marginal return in which NH said no to? So, we lose him for nothing; Philly claims him and flips him for the 19th best prospect in STL organization (was top 10 before the season started, so he had some tools) and they gave that up for a guy they couldn't use in the playoffs, if they made it? This gets worse and worse for NH. What a joke.

Looks like it was the Cubs that tried to claim Nicasio from Bucco waivers.

Very unlikely to be true.  Unless, of course, NH is a complete liar.

The Cubs have never been in a position to block any other division rival from claiming nicasio.    They had last claim rights in the division throughout August.  The cards could have used him, and the Brewers have a terrible pen.   He would have had to gone unclaimed by both for the division leading  Cubs to block ...who?  The Rockies or Diamondbacks?

So which is it?  The article is false and NH is a truth teller, or the article is true and he's a liar (by implication)?

Right that's exactly why it didn't happen.  He can't make that trade no matter what.  He had to revoke the waiver.

The cards probably didn't expect to get him, they were blocking us. NH can't make that move with STL beginning of August.

I disagree. If it was STL, there's no possibility he could've made any trade anyway. He would have looked even worse than he does now.

Door #3 was to keep nicasio and not have a PR nightmare in order to save 600k

If it turns out it was the Cubs, I assume they were blocking the Nats and maybe Dodgers. More concerned about the playoffs than getting to the playoffs.
