FJK, thanks for the tip on Billy Burns. He does indeed sound like the kind of player our Pirates would go for with their cheap ways...They certainly need someone who can play CF...We saw last year how corner OF's could not play CF at PNC... Appreciate the note...Wish late 60-early 70's Pirate-Gene Clines could still track'em down in CF...He was a reliable and serviceable OF. Think he is a coach with Cubbies these days...Beat'em Bucs

Agree with this.  Hate to see someone get injured, but the likelihood of Nava making this roster was almost nil.  Then again, this is the Pirates.


The day Nava signed, I said Nava was a minor league deal and no guarantee roster spot, you disagreed. You said: "I'm sure with the way this organization works, he will be handed over a starting spot because the cost is right."

Sammy! John Cangelosi! I have not heard his name in years! Great blast from the past. He did indeed have the glove and wheels on the those Pirate teams in late 80's thru early 90's.

He was listed at 5'8" but he seemed shorter. Played 13 years until age 36. Played more for the Pirates than for any other team.

It seems by default the Pirates are counting on SRod to be the backup plan at shortstop and centerfield. They'll be scrambling if Marte and Mercer are out at the same time.

I always doubted that.  People sure didn't agree stating typical Pirates move.



It sucks to have back surgery.  Did he get hurt or was this always a known problem?


I was convinced he would be scholarshiped a roster spot due to his veteranosity.   Right up until Dickerson was traded for.  Once that took place, Nava was out.



Edit:. I'm thrilled that we will be getting Nava back in late June or July though. That alone is going to play like a deadline add and may propel us over the hump!

I really liked John Jeter. 1971 in AAA he hit .324 with 17 HRs and 36 SBs. Turned out to be a AAAA.

Sorry for brining this back on subject...



Isn't Polanco the back up CFer? He played CF all through the minors.



Sean Rodriguez has only started 4 games at CF in his career and that was 2010.



Frazier started there once last year.



Dickerson has 23 starts in CF but none since 2015



It seems pretty apparent to me that when Marte rests, Polanco slides over and someone else plays RF.
