The pitching staff is too inconsistent to sustain winning streaks. The current starting 5 have accounted for 30 quality starts out of 62 along with 18 that were truly awful. And the BP is bad enough to lose some of the games when the starter pitches well. After 74 games, the Pirates have managed to win more than 2 in a row just 5 times with streaks of 5 twice, 3 twice and 4 once. And a couple of those streaks were due more to hitting than pitching. The average score for the 4 game streak was 7-5. The average score for one of the 5 game streaks was 8-4. In fact, they averaged at least 5 runs scored per game for all five of these winning streaks. It's very unlikely that the hitters can put up enough runs on a sustained basis to overcome the inconsistency of the starting rotation and the weakness of the BP to put together a serious winning streak.

Josh Bell has just been awful this season and I think it’s sonething the Pirates should be very concerned about moving forward. He has only 4 home runs and has yet to hit a homer in June and has not homered now in over 3 weeks. His OPS is right around 700 or below which is also god awful. Hopefully this is just a sophomore slump from Bell but if it’s not then the Pirates have a huge huge problem on their hands moving forward.

Freddy is right. Bell was SUPPOSED to be a "pure hitter," a "professional hitter," a "rising star." With power.

The Pirates have a big problem on their hands if Bell is flaming out right now.

Despite his defensive defiencies, I really believed Bell was going to have, at worst, a long career as a .300-20-80 kind of player.

This had better be a sophomore slump, or we can add Bell to the Pirates long list of problems, along with starting pitching, bullpen, power, defense, etc., etc.

Hopefully this is just an off season for Bell, but on the positive side at least they did not go out an sign him to a long term contract. If he is a flash in the pan then the Pirates aren’t stuck with a ton of money due him just like they are with Polanco.

He seems fixable because the problem seems to be his inconsistent swing, which looks awful far too often. I wish they would option him and let him work on it in AAA and see what Osuna could do playing regularly at 1B. That would address 2 issues.

And now we are only 7 games ahead of the lowly Cincinnati Reds for last place. Meantime Doofus is getting ready to salary dump players at the trade deadline so that BOB can pocket some more revenue sharing money.
