How many more wins do we get with two months of Chris Archer than we do with two months of Nick Kingham?

I dont think so.  The addition to payroll from Kela is about $400K I think. Even DeGrom would only add about $1.5. Surely they can add that much payroll.
but we want to take jabs at the payroll even on a day when we make a big deal . . .

Oh yeah, I forgot we acquired a relief pitcher. Whoopee!

If NH does the unthinkable and actually makes a trade for a good starting pitcher or middle infielder with a + glove I'll be impressed. If he doesn't take the opportunity of the TDL to dump a salary I'll be gobsmacked.

Archer is controlled for years.

Yeah, I understand and that's why I think he would be a good move (or something similar).

In terms of this year only, however, I think a bullpen pitcher might move the needle more.  Our rotation is unexciting, but I also don't see an obvious JeffLocke in it for removal either.

Edit-- just from an academic standpoint I wonder which one helps more this time of the year.

I think the Pirates pushed to finalize the deal for Kela early so they could have certainty about the package they can offer for Archer. The PTBNL aspect may even be about flexibility for negotiation.

With that said, Archer isn't without risk. He's getting pretty far removed from anything above mediocre results. The "team friendly" deal all the pundits keep discussing really isn't that team friendly going forward unless he starts pitching better. If they strike the deal, I'll hope for the best, but I think it's going to be really expensive. The Rays strike me as a team trailing the market on Archer. They keep wanting a little more than they should get for him while the value should be continuing to decline.

Personally, I think Archer. Do they want to get into the Playoffs? They need both.

If the reports of the Pirates getting Archer are correct, I'm very much surprised and impressed by NH. This is the right move. A real and genuine baseball move that makes the deal for Kela look like a very nice complementary move. Archer may or may not be a true ace, but he legitimately moves directly to the top of the Pirates rotation. This guy is a good pitcher.

Now if there's no salary dump I'll be well and truly gobsmacked.
